[Am I wrong] for bringing my dog into the office?

"This dog should be leashed! This is a workplace!"
  • 02
Here's the story: I recently adopted a dog in desperate need of a new home. She was having anxiety issues and could no longer stay where she was. I brought her home and we started working through things and it turns out she is a super sweet, loving little girl -- cute, small, and a hypoallergenic breed to boot.

Owning a dog is expensive if you work during the day because of dog walkers. So with permission of my upper management, I was allowed to bring the dog in once a week on Fridays. So far, so good.
  • 04
So my very first Friday I bring her in she is, as anticipated, the office darling. Everyone crowds around and says hello (ftr, she's a very well behaved dog, doesn't bark, and isn't aggressive). I let her roam around and get to work.

Unfortunately, no one notified the entire office because one coworker comes charging up out of nowhere screaming at us "Who's dog is this?! We have someone with a severe dog allergy! This dog should be leashed! This is a workplace!"
  • 06
and storms off. I quickly leash my dog, and make sure she's far away from them (she's hypoallergenic btw, so it wouldn't have ben that much of a problem). My office manager then receives a long, angry

email that goes into more detail and we find out that this coworker's child is allergic to dogs, not anyone actually in the office.

While I regret that they were't notified in advance, I do think this person's reaction was a little overblown. The dog went nowhere near this coworker or their teammates.
  • 10
Tl;dr I brought a dog to work without asking the entire office's permission in advance although I cleared it with supervisors. A A?
  • 11
elcad YTA Not everybody likes dogs. If it's not part of the job requirement to work around dogs then the co-worker has every right to complain.
  • 12
Daytripsinsidecars YTA. Some dog owners are the worst kind of entitled.
  • 13
Because your dog wasn't going to harm anyone does not mean you don't need to notify people beforehand.
  • 14
Every time I get in an elevator with a dog and it starts licking my boots or sniffing my crotch the dog owner always says "oh he's just being friendly". I wasn't assuming he was violent, I just don't want him up in my business.
  • 15
She feels the same. It's a shared office, why should you get to do something that makes other people uncomfortable - even if you don't feel they should feel uncomfortable. You and upper management s_k.
  • 16
Seanyd78 YTA - There is absolutely no reason your dog should not be on a leash while in the office. You had permission to bring your dog into the office, not to let it roam around without supervision. It is your
  • 17
responsibility to keep your dog near you and not bother others. If people want to see your dog, they can come over to your work area.

You are lucky someone didn't kick your dog. If someone had, you would be the one in trouble because all they have to say is your dog tried to attack them and it was self defense.
  • 20
Management would probably ask why you weren't supervising your dog to prevent it from happening.
  • 21
SciFiEmma I have a deep fear of dogs, sweats and heart racing, and would have to quit my job if they were in the office, no matter how friendly. Just an FYI for alternate viewpoint.
  • 22
IsNoMore YTA - There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog breed. It has nothing to do with shedding. It comes down to the proteins in dander and ALL dogs have dander.
  • 23
There may be breeds that trigger less allergies, but that is not the same as none. What one person is triggered by will be different from another.
  • 24
I say this as a pet owner and a former dog bather/groomer. As well as some one allergic to pets (though fortunately for me, not dogs).
  • 25
Marvalbert22 YTA for letting a dog with anxiety issues wander around your office, also the post is written to pump up the dog and really demean the worker:
  • 26
Cute, well behaved dog, rescue, everyone loves it! Mean, aggressive, yelling uncompromising lady
  • 27
armex88 YTA - I am a dog owner, love dogs, would love it if people could bring them to my office. However, not everyone is like that. Your management should have sent a message or told you to for sure, but you can't let

a dog roam in a new space like that. You said the pup has anxiety, what if it peed inside due to that, or tried to bite, or got scared of new places. You should have first sent a message, second walked your

dog around the office and introduced him, then you should have kept the pup on a leash by your desk for a while, taking your water cooler breaks to walk around the office more,

go outside. It sounds like not only did you do the wrong thin by your co-workers, you could have put your dog in an uncomfortable and dangerous situation.
