"The homeowner mentioned having family stay over, and asked if I could remove all of my things from the room"

AITAH for not leaving the room I rent for five days so the homeowner’s family can stay in it while visiting?

So I've been renting out a small room for $400 a month for about 1.5 years now. There has already been a little bit of unfairness
  • 03
going on, as the room's closet is full of the homeowner's stuff, and the homeowner also keeps a dresser full of their things in this
  • 04
room, but this is all I can afford so I just deal with it. Earlier this month the homeowner mentioned having family stay
  • 05
over, and asked if I could remove all of my things from the room, take it to my mother's (who lives 10 minutes away), and stay with
  • 06
her for five days, so the visiting family members can stay in my rented room instead of having to shell out money for a hotel.
  • 07
They offered to cut $50 from this months rent if I agree to this. To me, it seems really unfair to expect a renter to do this, but
  • 08
they seem to think it's a totally reasonable thing to ask of me. My family members all think it's incredibly r de. My mom is
  • 09
unwilling to agree to this, and even if she were, we don't really get along and it would be uncomfortable to stay with her.
  • 10
The homeowner is now very upset over this. AITAH for not leaving my rented room so the homeowner can let their family stay in it?

uberprodude NTA, it's not only unfair, it's illegal. This might be better served in a legal sub
  • 13
FlailingUpwards NTA. I hope you have a renter's agreement. Legally you have all right to not vacate the room however you might need to start looking for a new place if they decide to be petty about this.
  • 14
Glittering-Fix-6223 That really s ks - he wants to inconvenience you for the better part of a week, and only offers you $50?! I think since you've been putting up with him using it as his storeroom, he figures there's no ask too big. He's definitely TAH. Move as soon as you can.
  • 15
Spoedi-Probes NTA Tell them they can pay for a decent hotel for either you or the family who are visiting. Or you will rent the room to their family for $1,000 a week paid in advance.
  • 16
Sebscreen NTA. It is in your lease that you have full time occupancy of the room for the duration of your stay. The landlord could not even be bothered to offer you the proportional rate for the discount, $100, much less an inconvenience fee.
  • 17
XRaiderV1 you're paying to rent, that means legally, thats YOUR space, which means you can also lock it and deny them access outside emergency circumstances, eg water leak, fire.
  • 18
this also means that dresser and closet full of the homeowner's things can just simply be emptied out and left for them to sort. you rent, you pay for the space. its legally yours for the duration of the lease. NTA
  • 19
traciw67 Nta. I would take out the stuff from the closet and dresser. Because you are renting a room, not just a bed.
  • 20
Traditional-Bag-4508 ΝΤΑ $50 off rent is insulting on its own. $10 per day. The packing up, moving, and just inconvenience is outrageous.
  • 21
Clean-Experience-639 Don't do it If you leave, you might not get back in. I hope you have a valid lease.
  • 22
Effective-Several NTA. The homeowner is crazy. Didn't they realize that when they decided to rent out a room, they can't just arbitrarily ask the renter to move out for a while? And now the homeowner is upset about it? Yeesh.
