Over our time writing here, we have seen cats be the cause of many relationships ending. Unfortunately. We've seen people unable to get along with their partner's cats. We've seen people calling their partners unhygienic because of their cats. We've even seen a relationship of nine whole years end because the boyfriend didn't like his girlfriend cuddling her cat at night. Ridiculous things. And we keep telling people - figure the pet stuff out as soon as possible, because it could be a red line. 

So, we've seen people breaking up over cats quite a few times. We don't think that we have seen a cat save someone from a relationship the way that this cat did. When the boyfriend in this story suddenly said that his girlfriend cannot, under any circumstances, visit him because his cat is sick, and won't be able to visit him for a very long time because of that reason, lights started going off in this woman's head. And for good reason. Because the kicker? This cat, apparently, doesn't even exist.

    This is a throwaway account. I am a 21f and my boyfriend is a 23m, or so I thought. Me and him have only been dating for around 4 months,and I didn't really know him before we started dating like we weren't friends or anything. He just came up to me when I was on my morning walk and asked for my number.

I've never been to his house before, all the time we either meet somewhere else or my house. He immediately said oh no, no no no no we cannot do that.

    I was like why not and he was like my cat is sick, I didn't know he had a cat.(turns out he doesn't have a cat.) I thought it was a little suspicious so I came up with a plan, we were gonna meet up somewhere then I was going to follow him to his house just to see where he lives, cause I have no clue where he could possibly live.

    So we met up at a little diner restaurant place and we had a OK time he was still being a little weird and asking why I wanted to go to his house. And I was just like I just never been there. I was curious and he was like oh my cat has an internal illness so we probably won't be able to go there for a long time. and I was like oh my gosh I hope your cat is okay.

    Later in the evening when it came to us leaving, I made sure it looks like I left the parking lot before he did, I really just went around to the other side of the building. After he pulls out of the parking lot, I let one or two cars in front of me and I just start following him.

    I thought he was cheating on me and his other like girlfriend is gonna walk out, nope two little kids walk out of the door. along with an older looking woman. now my heart is racing. I'm about to start crying cause I didn't know he had kids, I could tell they were his kids because they were hugging and saying Daddy.

    so at this point, I'm crying on my way home and I call him and I'm like do you wanna come over? and now, obviously, I should've confronted him right but no he came over and I found out his phone password and I looked through his phone. not only did I found out he was married and had two kids. But that he was all so 40 Years old!

    I immediately felt disgusted with a 40-year-old man in my bed I don't know why I didn't notice he was 40 he looked a bit on the older side for being 23 but I just thought it was because of stress. Should I confront him or should I just break up with him and not say a word.

  • One of the most offensive things in this story is the fact that this man had the gall to use a cat as the excuse for his behavior. It undermines every time that we use them as an excuse. No, but in reality, we don't think much needs to be said here. Get this man out of your life in literally whatever way that you can.

It doesn't really matter how you break up with him but might I suggest that in the future that you actually get to know more about people before actually sleeping with them.

  • We don't know if there is an exact right way to make this breakup happen, but since we don't think his feelings need to be considered all that much - since he clearly gave zero consideration to yours - then you should do it in whatever way makes you feel the least bad.
