Dad moves 75-year-old girlfriend into house kids are due to inherit, 43-year-old daughter plans to remove her after his passing: 'He laid down a huge guilt trip'

Receiving an inheritance is one of the few upsides of going through the traumatic experience of losing a close relative, but it is not always an easy process. Even in the most straightforward of cases, there are all kinds of legal hoops to jump through just to have access to what was promised in the last will and testament.

Things only get more complex when more people than expected start getting involved in what surviving relatives believe is rightfully theirs. The battle of who gets what can become very ugly, very quickly, and occasionally, it even gets going before somebody passes. 

It is not a pleasant thing to experience from any perspective, and it is easy for it to start to feel like a lost cause. It is advisable to get ahead in these matters where possible, but that also involves a lot of tact and sensitivity in many cases.

    My father (75M) has always told me (43F) and my siblings (44M & 48M) the house is mine in his will and I can keep it or sell it (spilt proceeds between us) and my siblings get money to make even. Everything will be divided evenly regardless of how it is done. My father moved his girlfriend (75-ish F) into the house over the last few years. She is from a different state. She has now decided to sell her home.

  • I asked my father what does that mean when he passes and she is still there. Truthfully neither of them are in good health by any measure and both can barely get around daily and I understand how life ends. He laid down a huge guilt trip about hopefully we will let her stay there since she will "not have anywhere to go". She has family around her hometown and they have no children. She doesn't have family here to take care of her. My older siblings - 1 doesn't like her and the other has his kids

The house has been designated mine, when that time comes, since the day I turned 18 and could legally own it if a tragedy occurred. • Yes, I am sure there is an official legal will, and I know exactly what it states. • I would NEVER just kick her out to the street, I would give her and her family a few months to get situated and moved out. • I would sell it to her if she had the funds.

    IntroductionSea2206 It is perfectly within your rights. You can give her a couple of months to move out. But it is also possible to have surprises about your father's will after he passes. It is possible that he bequeathed the house to his girlfriend and is afraid to tell you.

The GF honestly should be moved into an assisted living facility since she sold her own house, hopefully that money was put into an account that produces sone kind of annuity so she can live off of that.

  • nypinta This feels like a bridge you can't cross until you get to it. Because your dad has every right to change his will and leave the house to her if he so chooses. Or put in stipulations. And while your dad might have laid a guilt trip on you, you have no idea if she would even want to stay there or not. So you're just borrowing trouble.
