That's exactly where this employee found themself when they fell ill in the middle of moving house. While they desperately needed to rest for the weekend when they got sick on Friday, they instead had to spend the entire time moving.
This meant that the illness lingered well into the next week, and the employee had to take multiple sick days to recover themselves. Despite the fact that they were obviously unwell when they tried to come in at the start of the week, they watched as their boss slowly unraveled at the seams. Slowly escalating from occasional messages to urgent requests. Then to accusations, calling their honesty and commitment to their role into question.
The employee realized that they weren't going to put up with this and resigned, and were surprised to find that upper management came clamoring for them to return to their role. They're now wondering whether or not they should return to their recently vacated job, possibly under a different manager, or just let sleeping dogs lie.
While one should always stick with their initial impulse when it comes to employment, at least there's a sign here that someone at the top cares, if not about the impact of this important employee leaving, then at least about the impact the sudden vacancy might have on their bottom line.
