These Adorable Hybrid Animal Illustrations Look Like They Belong in Avatar: The Last Airbender

One of my favorite things about Avatar: The Last Airbender are all of the funky animal hybrids. Even creatures that are not explicity hybrids – like camelephants, scorpion bees, or spider cats – actually are; Appa the flying bison is canonically part bison and part manatee (although, I'd argue he looks more like a bison combined with a tardigrade). I'm personally partial to the cute little duck turtles.

It's an absurdly funny little gimmick in the worldbuilding – especially since it really makes no logical sense. To call something a badgermole, you'd have to know what a badger and a mole is. But when the show features a regular, old bear, everyone in-universe seems incredibly confused by it.

The illustrations featured below by Lē Yamamura look like they would exist in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some are very obvious hybrids; there is a dragon cat, a donkey duck, and penguin dog. Others just seem like incredibly imaginative fantasy creatures. All of them would make interesting pets.
