Is my neighbour taking the p**s with my outdoor socket?

Came home a few times last week to find an extension lead snaking from my neighbour's garage into the socket on the back of my house.

I unplugged it the first time, figured it was an honest mistake. Then I caught him doing it again.

I had a quiet word, said mate that's my leccy you're using, it's on my meter. He just laughed it off and said it's only pennies and the estate management covers it anyway.
  • 05
It definately does not. He did it again while I was out, so I've now fitted a lockable cover over the socket.

This morning, I find a note through my letterbox saying since I've 'blocked the community socket', he'll need to charge his e-bike inside my house when it rains, and could I leave my back gate unlocked for him on Saturday.

The absolute cheek. I'm not trying to cause a war here, I even offered to go halves on getting a sparky to fit an outdoor socket on his own wall and he refused.

Now I hear he's telling other neighbours I'm being tight. Have I gone over the top by locking it, or is he just a cheeky sod?
  • 10
I dont know whether to just ignore him or ring 101 for advice. This is just mad.

EclipticBlues The pure entitlement to demand to use your electricity by you leaving the back gate open so he can freely enter your house without supervision... life is expensive for everyone why does he think he can use yours instead of his own?
  • 12
Also if it's attached to a house its the property of the owner of the house. Community charging stations are almost always a pole nearby or in a parking lot. If he insists on community electricity he should put in a request to install one of those charging stations to the city hall you live in the jurisdiction of. You're not overreacting by locking it.

DankyMcJangles Make sure the gate stays locked. The audacity

jjcanadian69 My parents had that issue with the neighbor 2 houses down trying to charge their Tesla with my parents' charger. Well, they did not even try to find the owner they just had the car towed.

Ted W Bring a load of your dirty laundry to his house and ask to come in and wash it.

pr1m347 Sorry doesn't he have electricity at his home? I don't understand how extension cord from your house is easier than taking fro his own house?
  • 18
Training-Package2220 Cut the cord next time and turn off your outdoor power when you're not using it.
  • 19
WindOk2625 When people say it will only cost YOU pennies, they seem to forget that it will only cost them pennies too ... which they don't seem prepared to pay. He is totally in the wrong.

realdappermuis Other than him being a - charging an ebike indoors is a severe fire hazard and nobody should do that ever. He can get himself an industrial extention cord from his house to wherever he needs to park his wee bike
  • 21
ToughAd7338 Why the f k would you offer to pay half for an electrician to install a socket on his house?? Must be he can sense a s ker when he sees one
  • 22
Wakemeup3000 So basically he doesn't want to invest any money into adapting his own socket to charge his bike and feels its just easier to do it at your house. No thank you. His bike could catch fire right next to your place. Keep the lock on and let him know he'll need to figure out how to charge his bike with his own electricity.
  • 23
S_Mallory163 If you can, turn off the power to outside sockets and remove the lock. If he complains tell him to talk to estate management
  • 24
Effective-Several Be sure to tell all the neighbors exactly what he did. And tell all the neighbors that they are free to offer their outlets for him to charge his devices.
  • 25
Odd_Reputation_4000 Take a photo of it first, then cut any extension cord found on your property into 4 inch sections right up to the property line. Put the pieces in a nice neat pile right there beside the end of the cord left.

CorporalCuddles_ Would be a shame if there was a power surge and whatever they have plugged into that extension cord got fried.
