School sends home a note about packing 'healthy lunches' after mom sends her kid with a slice of pizza: 'Boyfriend is convinced they sent that out because of me'

Getting kids to eat is not an easy task. They can be relentlessly picky for a long time, even to their own detriment. Sometimes kids only like buttered pasta and candy, and you can't really survive on that forever. So you make bargains with your kids. You compromise on "healthiness" sometimes in favor of calories. You try to introduce them to new foods, but you don't push it, lest they end up resenting you. You try to pack things that they like, but you also want to make sure they are eating enough to get them through the day. 

It's a relentless battle. You try to do your best for your kids, and nobody knows them as well as you do. So the last thing you'd probably want is somebody interloping in your parenting and trying to tell you you're doing something wrong. Everyone has an opinion on the parenting of others. You can't help it. But the best thing we can do is keep our opinions to ourselves, because nobody asked, and the world is overwhelming enough without constant judgment.

Like in this story, where a mom who tried to pack a wholesome meal (and did, by many accounts) was indirectly called out by her child's school, and more directly by her boyfriend. The following week, a section of the weekly class flyer asked parent to "please try to provide healthy and filling options for your child to ensure they have energy for our long afternoon". Boyfriend is convinced they sent that out because of me, and packing pizza is "white trash".

We never really bought those chips until he started getting them at school. Since he was enjoying them so much, I bought a bag at Costco and put some in his bag for snack.

  • The next day, he comes home from school and says he doesn't want the sun chips at school anymore. I asked why. His response "my teacher said it's not a very healthy snack." Like, you literally hand these out to every student in the school every other week. I send them once and the teacher had something to say?

  • a_w_k_w_a_r_d_tu... • 14h ago I used to work in schools and believe me that note wasn't about you. I've seen lunches with just a bag of chips, mayo sandwiches, dry ramen, and so much more. Schools usually send it out at beginning of year. Don't worry about it! Leftover pizza is still a favorite for me and I'm a healthy adult in my 40s lol

I had a teacher threaten child services once because I sent my preschooler with a whole boiled egg, nuts, fruit, cucumber and carrot sticks, cheese and rice thins. We don't have a lot of money and I thought that was a decent lunch for a preschooler.
