My roommates went from “friendly movie nights” to breaking into my locked room for makeup. I’m over it.

When I first moved into my off- campus apartment with three other girls, things were fine.

We weren't best friends, but we were friendly watched movies, cooked together, had a decent vibe.
  • 04
Then the boundary issues started. First it was little things: snacks disappearing, shampoo running out twice as fast, laundry detergent mysteriously gone.
  • 05
When I brought it up, they'd laugh, deny it, or promise to replace it (never happened).
  • 06
Then it got bigger. I saw one roommate wearing my wristwatch on Snapchat without asking.
  • 07
Another time, I came home to strangers sleeping in my bed.
  • 08
They also loved to use my special cooking tools (that I bought myself) and leave them greasy or slightly damaged.
  • 09
That's when I finally locked everything down bought a lockbox, a mini fridge, and started locking my bedroom door.
  • 10
They called me "paranoid" and "dramatic," but honestly, it was the only way to have peace of mind.
  • 11
At first, it seemed to work. Things were tense, but they eventually apologized, and I thought maybe we'd turned a corner.
  • 12
Then, two days later, one roommate literally broke into my locked room to grab makeup because she "really needed it."
  • 13
I wish I was exaggerating, but nope.

That was the final straw. My family's coming to help me pack up, and I'm leaving.

I don't care if the lease overlap is a headache I'm not living with people who think breaking into my room is acceptable behavior.

cheesekurgers I wouldn't even pay anymore rent. Let them learn about consequences

OP Most_Cycle_8338 I think that's what I'll workout with the landlord and them for not suing

ttopsrock You should file a police report for theft and lost goods. They'll continue this behavior and need to understand its not okay. There has to be REAL consequences.

curiousity60 Please report the breaking and entering and theft to the police. A police report can be very helpful in breaking your lease. It will do no harm to your landlord. It can help if landlord starts thinking about "money on the table" from you down the road.

Jurassic Park-fan-190 Check your credit.. they could have taken this a lot further since they had access to your things

impostershop Is there damage from the "break- in" like did she simply unlock the door (most bedroom locks aren't hard to defeat) or did she break something? Take pics and the only reason to make a police report is to hold her partially accountable for the hit you're about to take on unpaid rent.

dangerkido report to a police, breaking in to somone's room, and steal things, that's a crime
  • 24
CaregiverBrilliant60 Yes. i have known issues like this. My sister moved in to a dorm with her high school friend. Then things went toxic. In your next life, be an a hole from the start. Kindness is weakness.

Educational_Gas_92 Op, I'm furious for you, glad that you are moving, breaking into your room is beyond unhinged, on top of all the previous disrespect. Do they behave in such an uncivilized way with each other, or do they just target you? Speak with the landlord and explain the situation, for your own safety, you need to move, thankfully you have the means to do so (please throw out the makeup your wacko ex roommate used).
