My husband and 2 of my kids are very allergic to cat dander. We weren't sure the cats were going to make it through the winter, but they did. They've now made it through 2 winters.

My husband's oft repeated: "I hate cats! Those cats are here!" Has lost all credibility. We started giving them pets,

because they are quite friendly. Then they left a mouse on our walkway. I started giving them a bit of lunch meat once every few weeks.

They've majorly exterminated a lot of the pests around our house. They leave presents for my husband near his truck, or on our driveway where we go for walks. (We are pretty rural).

Husband decided they needed an actual shelter, not just the open barn with old straw. It's gotten as low as -8 here in the winter.

He used leftover materials and insulation. We got a couple self warming mats from a pet store for the shelter.

It's been sitting on the back deck (most protected spot from wind), for about a week. Last night I went outside and found them inside all nice and comfy!! | squealed!

Pinkbeans1 OP • 1d ago I give family updates. He always wanted a barn cat, but would never get a cat just to keep it outside. The kids believed his bluster about hating animals.

We had about 15 dogs dumped out here over the past few years. The dogs all moved along. We do not really have animal control out here.

Then the cats appeared a couple years ago. They are so cuddly. I'd bring them inside if I could. They are incredibly resourceful! 436 ○ Reply

OddWelcome2502 • 1d ago Please know that if you feed them- they will continue to hunt mice and other critters. Feeding them will just keep them at a good weight to handle winters! 342 Reply

basilk er 1d ago • If you want to bring them inside and it is a dander allergy they make special food that makes people allergic to cat dander not allergic anymore.

My coworker is a cat and we switched him over because some of our human coworkers are very allergic and the one w the worst allergies kisses him now (it takes I think 6 weeks for the food to work completely) 112 Reply ...

Tiny_Past1805 • 1d ago Yes! There's some protein or something in cat saliva that actually causes the dander allergy and that food deactivates it or something. Glad Also, I lost it at "my coworker is a cat." you're giving your cat coworker the credit he deserves. 106 Reply

MissMariemayl⚫ 1d ago My husband with the last three cats we've found outside and brought inside Imo, the most recent being a few days ago. We're up to five cats and this man is adamantly a dog man yet I find him yesterday napping with the kitten snuggled up next to him and his hand on her lol. 10 ○ Reply

gal_tiki 1d ago Wonderful! Hope you can perhaps manage to have them vaccinated and neutered, so that they can live long happy lives giving you plenty of gifts while protecting your home! 107 Reply Pinkbeans1 OP ⚫ 1d ago Of course! 59 > Reply ...

    • wrakshae 1d ago I love that the husband claims to hate them, only to proceed to make the most solid of shelters for them (I was imagining an insulated tub shelter, but no, he made them a full-on kitty HOUSE), complete with the cutest lil ramp that the cats likely won't even use (knowing cats, they'll just jump directly into the bed)! It's adorable. ↑ 51 > Reply
