Do your dogs have their own “made-up rules” you now have to follow? 🐾

Mine invented a bedtime routine (complete with toy delivery, zoomies, and blanket-tucking) that I must perform or else he refuses to sleep. Somehow I've become his bedtime assistant.

It made me wonder what - funny little rules have your dogs created in your house? Like a snack tax, a weird toy ritual, or a "must sit here first" routine?

Vegetable-Star-5833 My dog is going to be 20years old in 3 months. The only rules she has are "don't bother me"

Elanya Oogi, Momo & Raava - Schap... The evening walk does not count as an evening walk unless everyone has had dinner. Otherwise a second evening walk after dinner is required because the first one didn't qualify.

Tomgunn01 Looked after my brother in law's huge fox red lab before, couldn't get him to settle down on the first night so contacted him and he forgot to tell us that you have to put him in his bed and say to him 'night night sleepy boy, see you in the morning!' - it worked and he went out like a light after this!

au5000 Our dogs plan the walk route. They look at each other and then one stops moving until their preferred route is followed. Brats. They're brats. I blame the parents.

gnavenpaedagog He's not a very food obsessed dog. But every time we're going away for a few days, I pack his meals in little bags (like packed lunches) so it's easy on the go. And during that process, he must taste some for quality control or he gets upset. It's the only time he's ever demanding with food lol.

I just packed 6 bags for a weekend trip and he got 6 pieces of kibble for quality control.

Katharinemaddison When in bed Edward (an alleged Jack Russell) must be booshed with his own pillow in time with the boosh song to settle.

He must also have a nap at midday on his dad's lap in the living room. For that he has his silky shawl. At half eight he must have his cheese triangle.

He cannot walk from the house to the van or vice versa, little pretty paws must be carried like the baby prince he is. I... don't know how any of this happened.

hazydayss paw flair For some reason my dog won't eat his food without giving me a high five first. It's his favourite trick but I never taught him to do it before food.

Educational-Yam-682 My parents dog has to talk to me when I call. She hears my voice and starts "talking". Every single time. So they put the phone to her and I say "hello" and she talks and then calms down. Of course this weirdo is a husky.

disjointed_chameleon My little Terrier also has a bedtime routine. For reference, he has a dog bed in every room. Right around 8:30-9pm every night, he hops off the couch, grabs his living-room dog bed in his mouth, and trots off to the bedroom. If I don't follow him within 5-10 minutes, he'll re-emerge from the bedroom, peek his head around the corner of the wall, and stare at me like:

Did I stutter? It is time for BED, mother. And so, I slouch off the couch and off to bed we go.

ailish American Bulldog Mine needs to go out to have a morning pee, then she needs breakfast, then she needs to go back out to 1. This is all before our walk because she refuses to anywhere except her own backyard.

itscharlii My dog won't drink water unless it's fresh, and straight from the Brita... However, he will try and drink out of rivers and ponds...

swapacoinforafish From very early on our dog had this funny way of telling us she wanted to go out. She'd stop what she was doing and stand at the top of the stairs, stare down the stairs for about a minute and then just stare at us until we got the hint. No barking. no wailing. Just blue steel.

ComprehensiveBid 4520 My dog is the most a-type dog I've ever known. He has to walk a certain direction on our walks or I get the look. He has a bedtime routine- he needs two cookies put on the bed in a bowl, and I need to be in bed or he won't eat them. if they are the sandwich
  • 23
variety, he wants them separated so he can eat the filling first. If I'm late taking him out for his morning hike, he stands there and huffs at me until I get moving. I haven't used an alarm clock in years, because he's very prompt at waking me up at midnight (I have a very early morning work shift).

Stickliketoffee16 Mine insists upon a dentastix stick after his late night walk. If we take too long he goes to the cupboard, boops it & wags his tail aggressively while staring at us. One night we ran out of sticks. He was mad the whole night!
  • 25
MischievousHex One of mine won't eat his food until I pat his head and tell him he's a good boy. A single piece of kibble must be offered as a bribe to get their harness on.
  • 26
My boy also likes to parade his toy and show it to guests. The rules are that you have to look and tell him he's a good boy and say that the toy he has is so good and cool. If you don't do it soon enough or enough times he will begin climbing on things he's not supposed to like the TV stand, the crate, or even the person he wants attention from.

TheScarlettLetter One of our three has to have a 'special routine! She will cry at the bottom of the stairs with her current emotional support items until I bring them up to the bedroom, and then run a lap around the house, cry again at the bottom of the stairs, etc. (normally I just need a second to take my stuff up before I take hers but she's dramatic).
  • 28
She then climbs onto the bed and lays in what I call my 'nest' (one of those G-shaped pregnancy pillows). I must crawl in bed to lay beside her (atop one side of the aforementioned pillow) and snuggle her/tell her she's the best, then she will move to let me into my spot.
  • 29
She goes to the floor. I fall asleep. She wakes up, jumps on the bed, lays on my head and snores for a bit, then returns to the floor, then back to my head and back to the floor. This repeats all night long. She's a 95lb. Bernese Mountain Dog.
