Anxious parents often worry about how their young children with chronic health conditions will fare out in the world by themselves.
Parents can take every precaution possible to ensure their child knows how to deal with their health, but a guardian can only do so much if the other adults in their children's lives don't do the same. Teachers are supposed to be trusted adults, but the bad apple in this next story shows us that some adults prefer a power trip over their students' well-being.
Living with diabetes, if handled promptly and with care, is much more manageable than most would expect. The parent who shared this story explains that they send their 13-year-old son to school with his glucose monitor, and he knows exactly what to do if his sugar levels drop or spike. The thing is, a child can only help themselves, apparently, if they have explicit permission from their teachers.
The son's glucose monitor began beeping during his exam, and the teacher went on to confiscate the monitor because he has a strict policy against electronic usage during examinations. I guess test integrity is more important to a child's health. Aren't these people supposed to be mandated reporters?…
