Couple who only wanted to adopt 1 orange kitten changes their mind and settles on 2, then can't bear leaving the third one behind and ends up adopting all 3 siblings: 'They are a whirlwind of destruction and affection'

You know how we say that cats choose their humans and not the other way around? Yeah, that's true in basically all cases. Even when you actively make a decision to adopt a cat, you never actually know which cat you're going to walk out with - or how many cats. Sometimes, you think that you want to adopt one kitten, but the universe - or rather the cat distribution system - has other plans for you. 

That's what happened to the couple in this story. They were planning to adopt just one kitten, but after taking one look at the picture of the kitten and her its two siblings, the wife instantly knew that they had to have all three of them. The husband took a second longer to come to the same conclusion, but of course, at the end, he figured the same thing out. Now, their house is full of endless shenanigans, and every single second of it is ameowzing.

    Originally my wife wanted an orange kitten to keep our other cat company while we were at work, so I kept an eye out on Facebook for kittens in the area. Cue these little turds. They looked so dang cute | was convinced it was a scam at first, it's happened before lol.

    They were rescues a local foster mom took in and she was looking for the right fit for hopefully all three, but would separate for the right home. Of course after sharing the pic and story with my wife she says "so we're getting all 3 right?” to which I, the litter patrolman of the household, vehemently replied "h..l no."

  • Honestly, we understand the wife. We understand her so much. One look at this picture, and it would have been “all or none”. These three should never be separated, there is too much love between the three of them. Keeping them together was the only right thing to do.

    Well as the long story short goes, happy wife happy life. The foster mom brought them by to let us meet them and to kinda vet us as good candidates, fortunately we checked all her boxes and she was eager to let us adopt one or more of the kittens. After I compromised with two, I started feeling guilty about separating them and here we are.

    They're 6 months older now and they are a whirlwind of destruction and affection going into their teenage stage, and they are the best decision we ever made. Our older cat has warmed up to them too, Cheddar (the goofy orange tabby) is his new best friend.

    Pic 1 is Sushi, she's definitely the most attention-starved out of the bunch now which is a shock cause at first she was the most aloof of the 3 siblings. She meows pitifully if you walk by her without acknowledging her existence every single time.

    Pic 2 is Smokey, she's the princess. She's also the most dramatic. If you hear her and a sibling rough-housing she will hiss and screech the entire time even when she's the instigator. She could be considered the runt, she's noticeably smaller than the other 2 but hides that fact at first glance due to her excessive floof.

    Also she drools more than any dog I've ever met. It's insane. You get her to purr and moments later there are beads of drool running down her hydrophobic fur and onto the furniture or worse, onto us haha.

    Pic 3 is Cheddar (and Kitten). The Big Cheese. Cheddar Bay Biscuit. My little one brain cell buddy. He's the big boy of the siblings, the troublemaker, the garbage disposal where no crumb is safe. I would di for his blank stare he's always shooting our way. He's everything I wanted in an orange.

    Pic 3+4 is Kitten, government name Rocket. We just got so used to calling him Kitten that's what he answers to now. Imagine how difficult it is not to call the actual kittens "kitten" when we also have a "Kitten" Imao. As you can see he bonded with Cheddar, which is exactly what we wanted in the first place when we were originally only getting one additional cat.

    He's massive at 18lbs, yet the vet promises he isn't overweight. He's just that big of a cat. It's like picking up a toddler every time I have to swoop him up for any reason (which is all the time cause he likes stirring up mischief)

  • We can imagine the chaos that these three are bringing, especially at this age right now when they finally have the freedom that they were looking for and so many ideas for shenanigans to bring to fruition. But we also know that it's worth every second.

    dehydratedrain I was a foster, and seeing a couple come in for 2 and go home with all 3 made me cry happy tears. They felt awful about leaving the runt, and now she's the queen. I gave them all my baby pics (starting at 3 weeks), and now they send me birthday photos (now 2 yrs). I always enjoy it.

    GoatWithBeardofGrey OP The lady was beyond ecstatic to keep all 3 together, especially to homeowners that were already planning on getting them fixed and refuse to declaw, ever. She could see the cracks in my resolve when I contacted her changing my mind from 1 to 2, it took little to no nudging to get me to commit to all 3 D I send her updates every now and then to assure her they're being loved to the fullest potential.
