'My phone rings, and it's HR asking if I'd come back': Company lays off employee of 8 years one year before her retirement, the rest of her department quits afterwards

It is an unfortunate reality of the working world that most employees are never truly safe from getting sacked.

Sometimes, this happens for valid reasons, such as poor performance or misconduct. Plenty of other times, though, people lose their jobs purely for the sake of cutting costs or achieving the vision held by an out-of-touch member of senior management. It isn't a pleasant experience, and it is something that all those who work should have a contingency plan for.  

One of the few potential upsides in this situation is that a company may realize that they have made a mistake in their firing, and you can then be a witness to the consequences. It might not make up for the sting of being given the boot, but it can still be satisfying. Sometimes, it can even end up with a person getting their old job back—assuming they are willing to take it.

  • This is exactly what had happened to one woman who had had a long and successful career as a corporate buyer when her company decided they needed to make salary cuts, and therefore decided to get rid of her. Only a year out from retirement, the former employee relied on family help and unemployment payments to get by.

    However, after she left the department that she worked for started to struggle, as many of her former colleagues quit. In the end, HR asked her if she would like to take her job back, and she negotiated a temporary contract with better benefits than before. She shared her story.

I told them if you want to call me and ask questions we need to set up a consulting agreement. They wouldn't do it. And never called. Thank goodness.

  • Side note. During my time back everytime my boss asked me a question about how something was done (yes I had to train him too as he realized how lacking he was in knowledge) ... I would preface my answer with "well before I was fired, we did... " it was hilarious to see the look on his face.

  • eviltwinn2 A really similar thing happened to my mom but she retired a year or two early. Her previous place of employment called her back because they were struggling big without her. She loved it there so she went back for a year and half. She still occasionally consults. IDK if she made more or not going back but she had basically unlimited PTO and took off a lot more than she use too.

  • shaneyshane26 I'm surprised they didn't little stupid stuff to retaliate against you. That's usually what happens when a valuable employee is asked to come back. And just think there are thousands of people that get the axe who aren't as lucky to have a cushion when they get let go. There are a ton of people in that situation right now.
