This is exactly what had happened to one woman who had had a long and successful career as a corporate buyer when her company decided they needed to make salary cuts, and therefore decided to get rid of her. Only a year out from retirement, the former employee relied on family help and unemployment payments to get by.
However, after she left the department that she worked for started to struggle, as many of her former colleagues quit. In the end, HR asked her if she would like to take her job back, and she negotiated a temporary contract with better benefits than before. She shared her story.
