Is this just sibling rivalry, or is it reasonable to charge your house guests for their stay?

Staying over at someone's house can be a major inconvenience. It knocks you off your rhythm and interrupts your routine. If you're a person who thrives on routine, then it's important for you to keep that. It can impact you in a huge way. But this is part of being human, and it can also be wonderful. Maybe it's a friend you haven't seen in a while, or a family member you're happy to do a favor for. Either way, it's a good idea to develop your own system for dealing with houseguests. 

Maybe you have certain boundaries in place, like if your door is closed, that means you can't come in (a pretty basic rule)… or maybe you go so far as to charge your guests a fee. They are using your resources, after all. But is that reasonable to do? Especially if the person hosting you is your immediate family member? Should we tolerate this level of pettiness in our lives?

  • One woman tested the outer limits of that idea when she sent an invoice to her sister after she stayed with her for a couple of weeks.
