I (26F) adopted a rescue dog two years ago, a sweet 5-year-old beagle named Benny. He's my world, super calm, great with kids, but shy around strangers.
  • 03
Last month, my cousin (7) came over during a family barbecue and instantly loved Benny. Fine.
  • 04
He threw a ball, fed him treats, all good. Then my aunt, his mom, started saying things like, "Wow, Benny seems to really love kids.

Maybe he'd be happier in a family home!" I thought she was joking. She wasn't. A few days later, I came home from work and Benny was gone.
  • 07
His leash and food bowl too. I panicked, called everyone and my aunt picked up laughing.
  • 08
She said she "borrowed him" because her son "missed him." Borrowed. My dog. I told her to bring him back now or I'd call the cops.
  • 09
She said, "You're being ridiculous, it's just a dog. You don't even have kids!” I didn't argue, just called the police.

They showed up at her place, confirmed Benny was mine (microchipped), and made her hand him over.

She's now blocked, and my parents are furious at me for "escalating things." No regrets. My dog isn't a toy for your kid.

rasputinology • 4h ago I'm sure she'd react very reasonably if you "borrowed" her kid without notice because Benny missed it.

Cybermagetx • 4h ago Tell your parents to fuck off. Shes lucky she didnt get arrested. Dogs are property under law. And shes stole and was in possession of stolen goods.

Karamist623 · 4h ago She didn't borrow your dog. She stole him. She intended to keep him until she, or her kid, got tired of him. Some people don't deserve dogs.

jclom0 4h ago Oh my goodness! Im glad you got him back safely. I would freak out if one of my dogs went missing. I would never forgive anyone for taking them even for a second. Borrowed, that is bull shit.

I'd be furious with my parents too for taking the side of that crazy witch!

Kiya_Wolf 4h ago. I can't understand how people don't realize our pets are family... not an object that is so easily given away. I would go to war if someone tried to take away one of my pets.

crazynadine • 4h ago that's wild. some people really think they can break into your house, steal your pet, then get mad at you for doing what it takes to get him back. i hope you changed your locks in additon to blocking your aunt. i wouldn't put it past her to try again...

Thomisawesome 3h ago "It's just a dog." So she looks at it like an iPad or pair of shoes. You should go "borrow" her laptop or something. "It's just a MacBook. You don't even have a design company!"

Mariethefairy ⚫ 2h ago. Do the cops have a chip reading device in their squad car? Or did they take the dog to the vet, confirm it there, then take him back to your aunt's house then give him to you?

TheMule90 · 3h ago I too would call the cops and my local vet if my pets got stolen by a crazy asshole!
