26-year-old works in tattoo shop while living with mom, moves out when mom tries to ground her for a job she doesn't approve of: 'Under my roof, you'll live by my rules'

When adult children move back into their parents' house, it is rarely their first choice of living situation. Most of the time, they are going there either because they have been kicked out of their previous accommodation, or they want to save some money, and neither of those options exactly screams 'fun'. Even those who have a strong relationship with their moms and dads can find it trying to live with them all the time, while also fully exercising the benefits of their adult independence.

One of the reasons for this is that many parents will take this as an opportunity to try and control their kids in a way that they should no longer be able to. Perhaps the main benefit of growing up is that you don't have to listen to your elders if you don't want to, but that doesn't stop some of them from trying to rule their households with an iron fist.

    When she told her mom about this, she did not react well. Denouncing the job as “trashy”, she retaliated against her daughter by instigating a number of “house rules” that seemed to be a punishment for taking a role that she didn't approve of.

    The daughter maintained that she was an adult, and she wouldn't be grounded by her. Within a week, she had found somewhere new to live and was ready to move out. She shared her recollection.
