28-year-old tenant feuds with entitled old neighbor over her balcony lights: 'You new tenants come here and change everything!'

In every neighborhood or apartment building, there is always someone who gets on everyone's nerves. 

You know, the kind of long-standing resident who loves to pick fights and cause trouble just because they feel that the years they have spent in the same place have earned them the audacity to be unkind to newcomers. 

We've all encountered these unicorn individuals, and we've all had to find a way to appease them without losing our integrity along the way. This 28-year-old tenant recently got into an extended back-and-forth with her next-door neighbor over her balcony lights. She wasn't violating any rules and regulations. She wasn't disturbing the neighbor's property or living conditions in any way either. 

Clearly, this woman simply wanted to take away someone else's joy. Thankfully, the author started to notice that the older woman was crossing boundaries herself. Several members of this online community suggested that the 28-year-old should begin documenting every disturbance to build a case against this woman should the need arise.   • The older woman's temperament reminds me of a classic New York apartment story a friend of mine once told me. In this instance, all the tenants in a small building were being compensated to temporarily move out for six months so that al the apartment units could be properly updated and renovated. Everyone took the landlord up on his offer with the exception of one person, who opted to stay for six months with all the constant construction just to make a point. Something gives me the sense that this man and the older woman from this anecdote would get along swimmingly.
