'I forfeited pristine furniture as just the cost of having pets'

I never have trimmed a cats claws, as I've never seen it be necessary before. And I am talking trimming, not declawing. That's just inhumane, in my opinion. And I know some feel the same about trimming as well.

So one of my two cats, it just seems his nails always get stuck in everything. Like he will get up from laying on a blanket or my lap, and always has to wiggle his foot to get it out. Sometimes it even takes a few tries and I will

help him. They don't seem much longer than my other cat, but this one never wants to use the scratching post, and I've tried several types. He has always been just uninterested.
  • 05
But they just seem to embed in any fabric or furniture. It doesn't SEEM to bother him, he doesn't whine or anything. And I'm not asking this for the sake of saving furniture, or myself in general. I

kinda figured I forfeited pristine furniture as just the cost of having pets. And I'm fine with that. I'm thinking for the kitties sake. While he doesn't seem bothered, it HAS to be annoying as hell.
  • 08
And there is some concern I have, him getting stuck and hurting himself without my help. But he's 8, and not exactly jumping off the walls anymore. And even younger, he has been a pretty chill cat. But still, he's a cat, you never know what they'll do. Even though I've helped him every once in a while, he never seems like he actually needed it.

So I'm wondering, if I should look into trimming his claws? Is filling them a bit an option? I've tried getting him to use a scratching post, so alternatives to that? Or am I just being paranoid and should just let him be?

Comfortable_Hon... It doesn't hurt to trim them, most cat claws are clear or whitish with a clear quick. Don't cut the pink part, and he's good.

I usually just get a simple set of nail clippers and just take the very tips off, blunting them. I have three cats, only really blunt the front paws, and it takes maybe 2 minutes to get all 6 paws. But it helps that they're used to the routine and me touching their paws.

Yohte I trim my cats claws every 3 weeks. It's very easy! You might need a second person to hold and distract him.

Greenfire32 Trimming is fine. If you're nervous about it, just blunt the tips of his claws and don't worry about taking off any kind of length or anything. That's often times enough to relieve these kinds of issues and doesn't harm the cat at all.

lanDOsmond My wife and I just trim cat claws as we go - when we can sneak a paw in when they are sleeping, or whatever. I don't think we've ever done all four paws on a cat in one go - we just focus on whatever claws are especially pointy when they are making biscuits on us.

Commercial-Olive... I trim my cats nails and it definitely doesn't hurt them and I think is better for them and you. Like you mentioned, it keeps them from catching their claws on blankets/furniture and reduces the risk of them like

breaking their nail or ripping it out (which would hurt them). It also helps keep my cats from accidentally scratching me/guests (my kitten specifically) because when you don't trim the ends they just get like really sharp.

They might not like it, especially at first, if they're not used to you touching. their paws. I typically hold them in my lap (you can also have someone hold them) and take some small cat nail clippers and clip the sharp tips off. I do one paw at a time (do a paw on first cat,

let them go, do a paw on the other cat, let them go, repeat), but you might have to do more like one nail at a time depending on how willing they are to sit still for you

CincySnwLvr It's not inhumane to trim their claws.. just make sure you're not clipping so far back you hit the quick. If his claws are getting stuck, he's not adequately caring for them himself so you need to help him out.
