AITA for refusing to pay for a new door for a car I hit.

I live in Montreal which has been transformed in the past few years to have a lot of cycling infrastructure.

I was cycling in a bike lane. The lane was upgraded to have some small concrete barriers between it and the car lane but unfortunately this barrier isn't all along and only near each intersection.

Sadly cars still park in the unprotected areas especially delivery drivers like doordash. A door dash driver parked in the opposite side bike lane suddenly drove into my lane at 90 degrees to do an illegal u turn, there is a solid line so you cannot even pass in the oncoming lane.

I did not have time to completely stop and hit the door of the car head on.

I was fine and so was the bike but my helmet got a dent from hitting the car window.

He got out and started shouting at me and telling me that I am an asshole and should have just stopped and waited for him to turn and that I did it on purpose and he saw me.

The car door had a massive dent from the impact. He then said this is going to cost a lot of money and told me I would have to pay for a new door.

He was still blocking the road and some other drivers started honking so he moved the car to park in the bike lane.

I asked for his insurance and said he is the one who owes me a helmet and he declined to give me anything.

KaliTheBlaze NTA. If he won't give you his insurance information, take this one to the police. He executed a dangerous illegal move on the road, and now he's harassing you instead of paying for the damage he caused you. FYI, if you haven't replaced the helmet, please do. Even if the dent looks insignificant, the helmet has lost its ability to protect you. Even helmets that look completely undamaged should be replaced after accidents. It sounds like you probably already know that, but I figured I

HollyGoLately You need to inform the police, this should have been done straight away.

RedRunner04 NTA. He's harassing you for payment BECAUSE he knows he can't claim from his own insurance.

NTA. GRidgeflyover Let your insurance know that happened, but I have a feeling that legally he doesn't have a leg to stand on if he did an illegal turn You could probably tell him to go pound sand. I certainly wouldn't do anything before getting his insurance. He may be uninsured or underinsured and that's why he's trying to get you to pay. Next time you should probably have wait for a police to come and get a report.

DolQual123 NTA. Three things you need to do: 1. Tell the police. 2. Tell Doordash 3. Get a new helmet - they're good for one accident.

br4ssmooseknuckle NTA, that's why the driver has insurance. Not sure how the insurance system works in your area, but you said the driver made an illegal u-turn. He can kick rocks and pay for his own door.

Next-Firefighter4667 Seriously dude? Why haven't you made a police report? You admitted he did an illegal u turn and was in the bike lane, he admitted he saw you and went anyway. He's harassing and threatening you. What more do you need to be told to convince you that you aren't in the wrong and need to get the authorities involved?
