Noticed her in the neighborhood maybe a month or more ago. I thought she was so interesting because she wouldn't run away if I kept my distance but also wouldn't let me get close. Then about a week ago I went out in the evening to get the mail and

notice two little eyes watching me from a vacant flower bed on my porch. I brought her a bit of chicken and she has met me back there every night at sundown for more. At first she was super skittish and ran away if

I did anything more than watch her. But a few days ago I got her to take food from my hand and today she let me touch her but it was just for a second. I opened the door to the house and she seemed interested but I think we

were both terrified. I don't think she is anyone's cat because of how easy she runs. My kitty of 17yrs passed about 8 months ago and I kind of like the idea of a black cat coming to me around

Halloween. Do you guys think she is too old to socialize? When I was a kid I used to befriend neighborhood cats but it's been years. Any advice is welcome.

UPDATE: Well we continue to make progress. Yesterday we had full on pets from head to tail. Still skittish and kind of runs away and then comes back and then runs again - but if I hold out my hand and let him come to me and

Being able to get this close also revealed new information - definitely a boy. Thank you everyone for your advice and support.

ml5683 I don't think this is a coincidence keep on doing what you're doing and get her in so you can give her those loves. Sounds like you both could use it! Thank you for caring for her

Difficult_North_272 In my experience age isn't all that important as long as you're consistent with your efforts. Most cats can be befriended eventually but if not, it's more of a personality thing than age related.

    OrdinaryPeopless Take her in!

Extra_Weight719 Age is just a number, love and companionship don't have an expiration date

Sharp-Maintenanc... She looks young enough to still warm up to people. Just keep feeding her and let her set the pace. Some ferals turn into total lap cats once they decide they trust you.

CatPaws55 She's already trusting you. With a bit of time and patience she'll become your best friend. She's super cute. Take her in.

TinyPretzels What a sweetie! She seems to have taken a shine to you. Keep up feeding her in the evenings and see if she will walk right into your house. Keep in mind she may be a lost pet or someone's 'outdoor' cat, taking her to the vet and scanning for a microchip will tell you where to go from here.

Sorry for the loss of your cat, 17 years is a long time. Sometimes new pets find us when we need them to.

MoonDragon59 They're never too old! Time and patience is key. Vet visit asap for health check, vaccinations and schedule spay or neuter. Keep her in a quiet area, but where you can go interact with her/him. Talk quietly and let her/him come to you. Allow them to come to you.
