  • Am I wrong for not wanting to wear my mother's superstitious ring because I developed an allergy to it?

My mother is very superstitious and took me to a astrologer in order to help me get through my college entrance examinations phase, the astrologer suggested to buy a stone for 10k and make me wear it for a lifetime, i was okay with it until I actually started wearing it and it was extremely itchy, i switched it on my other
  • hand also but both of my little fingers started itching so bad that they swelled up and I realised that I've developed an allergy to that ring even tho it was made of pure gold, I told my mother that I can't wear it anymore because I'm allergic to it and it itches and burns to the point where I can't keep it on, i even suggested that I would wear it as a necklace if she insists, she bursted and threw a

  • tantrum saying I wasted her money and im ungrateful, nothing good will come out of me even in the future, the problem wasn't with the ring, I was the problem and hence the ring was rejecting me, I exploded out of rage because I
  • expected for my own mother to care about me more than that ring, I told her that If I would've known that it would cause me an allergy i would've adviced u against buying it, i told her she's superstitious and I wouldn't risk an infection cuz of an unreliable ring

alsotheabyss NTA but I'd bet my bottom dollar that's not real gold, or it's gold plated.
  • OldBoyShenanigans Oh wow. Your mother is overly dramatic and very unsympathic. I'd be inclined to take the ring to a jeweler (without telling your Mum) and have it tested to see if it is real gold. ΝΤΑ
  • Omnomfish A normal person would have considered the possibility that the person who insisted someone wear something they are allergic to every day for the rest of their life and charged 10 grand for it might have been full of shit, but not your mother. Oh no. The chances of it being pure gold are slim btw.
  • Ive got no solutions but a whole lot of judgement for your incredibly gullible mother, NTA
  • No_Consideration8800 NTA, you didn't waste her money, she did. Or rather, the conman who suggested the 10k stone did. This imaginary hocus pocus stuff is just that. Imaginary. The only reason to keep doing it is if you enjoy/believe in it, but your mom should not be forcing her make-believe on you.
  • slyf0x530 Astrologers study the relationship of the planets in relation to your birth... You shouldn't need a ring for that...
  • EuropeSusan NTA, your mother wasted her money on a quack. I doubt ths ring in made of Gold, and the stone's worth will be like a dinner.
  • HereForALaugh714 NTA. It makes absolute sense that people who believe in astrology would get suckered into buying a $10,000 fake gold ring, only to find out they are allergic to it and yet still wear it. Don't worry, you can take it off. Astrology and crystals are not real.
  • MarissaLa Troienne You and your mother have been scammed. You've been had. No way that the stone and the "gold" ring is worth 10k. 14 karat gold and above should NEVER cause an allergic reaction. I'm allergic to nickel and within a few hours I break out into a rash. I'm
  • grmrsan NTA - But clear nail polish will likely solve your issue. I've been using it to protect my skin from metal allergies for decades. Just reapply when it starts to flake.
  • _Morvar NTA this is ridiculous and I'm sorry your mom is treating you like to that None of this is your fault.o Definitely not gold, your mother has been scammed. The scammer probably fed into her worries about your future or something, and told her exactly what she wanted to hear to confirm her beliefs and she went with it...
  • GlitchKraftTv ΝΤΑ OP didn't waste mom's money, MOM wasted mom's money on some fake ass ring
  • Ja_Lonley NTA. An allergy to Gold, while technically possible (you can be allergic to anything), it is highly unlikely. I suspect like others have said, that's not real gold.
  • Hero_Girl Did your mom buy the ring from the astrologer? Because this smells like a scam. NTA for not wanting to wear it. I wouldn't either. Have it looked at by a jeweler to prove to your mom if it's real or not (I'm guessing it's not) to appease her.
  • RPG_Rob I'm pretty sure this astrologer has built up a relationship with your mum, and your mum trusts her, believing her bullshit and handing over top dollar for the privelege. The fact that your magic ring is very likely to be cheap alloy and glass means your mum has to consider the reality that she has been scammed, she's not going to accept that challenge to her beliefs. Explain her what the Sunk Cost Phallacy is.
