Part of growing up is learning to find charm in the things that once made you cringe. The fashion choices, the hair, the awkward poses… all of it. It takes a certain level of maturity and self-reflection to start to see those old moments in a new light for what they were: people doing their honest best to fit in in an era that had a very different definition of the word "cool."

These 90s prom photos are a perfect example. Once they were tucked away in attics and photo albums, but now, they've found a new life online. It's easy to laugh at the giant sleeves, elaborate updos, and incredibly uncomfortable poses, but there is something genuinely sweet about them, too. They capture a kind of innocence exclusive to a time before filters and retakes and when prom night felt like the biggest and most important event in the world.
