Work-from-home employee rebels after boss starts tracking mouse and keyboard activity: 'Remote work was supposed to be about trust and flexibility'

  • My company just rolled out software that tracks mouse movement, keyboard activity and active screen time to make sure we're actually working. I've been remote for two years with zero
  • performance issues. My work gets done on time. My reviews are solid. But apparently that's not enough anymore now I have to prove I'm working by constantly moving my mouse and
  • typing. So instead of focusing on actual output I'm now performing "looking busy" Jiggling my mouse during calls. Keeping random tabs open. Scheduling emails to send at specific times so it looks like I'm active all day.
  • The irony is that some of my best work happens when I'm thinking, researching or planning none of which involves frantic typing. But the system doesn't measure results. It measures motion.
  • Remote work was supposed to be about trust and flexibility. This feels like office surveillance with even more paranoia. I was sitting on my balcony last night with a beer thinking about how backwards this is. They hired
  • adults, then decided to treat us like we're trying to get away with something. If the work is getting done why does it matter if I take a break, go for a walk or spend 20 minutes reading instead of typing?
  • Anyone else dealing with this? How do you push back without looking like you're hiding something?
  • DistantGalaxy-1... • 14h ago I think this is a mistake. Everyone needs to ignore these things. It's the only way that companies are finally going to see how dumb this whole thing is. If they confront you, ask them flat out if your productivity is less?

  • WRB2 11h ago Sounds like a fun DIY project to build a raspberry pi board and app. You give it the text of a program to type, strokes to compile it, fix a bug, recompile, then delete it and start over. Have it present to be a keyboard and a mouse to your computer.
  • Management has crossed the line. If I was working I'd be so f d. I still work out ideas pen, paper, and these days a tablet. Management hate me anyways.
  • marcster13 · 9h ago Just because they are tracking does not mean they care that everyone is moving the mouse and needlessly typing. There might be some
  • slackers they can use this tool to justify firing them. If you are completing all the work your role requires then I wouldn't worry about it. Let your work speak for you.
  • Wait and see if they approach you for what they deem lack of computer movement.
  • BehindTheRoots • 14h ago Unfortunately sounds like a management trust issue. Sounds like a pretty big red flag...if you don't have supportive leaderhsip above you to share your concerns with, consider looking elsewhere.
