Don't cry over spilled milk, especially if it's not even spilled on the table.

We all know people in our lives who freak out over minor issues. They cry and beg for forgiveness if they accidentally break a glass, as if that glass were a Fabergé Egg instead of something bought at Target ten years ago for $5. This emotional fragility can stem from many sources. Maybe they were punished too heavily for minor transgressions when they were a child, and they feel they must perform remorse for doing anything that could upset anyone. Maybe they feel that any minor mistakes reflect poorly on them, and because they have such low self-esteem, they assume everyone else feels the same way. 

If you are one of those people, it's probably best that you do some work on yourself before you have children. If you don't, your kids are going to grow up fearing making any mistakes because it will make their mom or dad angry. Kids want to please their parents, and they have to do a lot of emotional regulation if their parents aren't emotionally regulated themselves. Emotionally regulating for two comes at a price, and it can take years to unlearn that behavior.

The point of a place mat is for it to catch stray food, getting at all upset about something getting on it (especially when that something is already cleaned up) is about your mum and her not being in a good mental place. That is not something you should feel responsible for, even if it can be hard not to sometimes. I really hope your mother can get some help dealing with her mental health and learn to find some joy in life.

  • Vegetable-Cod-7253 OP Yes, she is definitely a perfectionist when it comes to our home. Constantly cleaning and gets really upset if it's not spotless. When my brother and I clean she will argue it's not clean enough. If she finds a stand of hair that has fallen from my head onto the floor, she'll make me pick it up and put it in the bin, same if she finds a bit of dirt on the floor.

  • plscallmeRain That's called people pleasing. It's a common habit of children who were raised by overreactive parents. You know she will escalate over anything, so you're trying to give her nothing to escalate over. It's anxiety. You'll have to work through it and learn to trust others to not overreact once you leave the home.
