    got called into the office today because I took my 30 min lunch break. apparently the team "needed me" and I should've "read the room" told him it's literally the law and he goes "well in this economy you're lucky to even have a job. plenty of people would kill for your position"

    i've been here 3 years. never called out sick. always cover shifts. make $16/hr. sent out 5 applications during my lunch break today. done being grateful for crumbs. update: he just sent an email about "team players" and "commitment." i'm the only one who got it. cool cool cool

    Orlokman Document that email and save it. Then when you bounce, forward it to his boss with "just wanted to make sure this aligns with company policy on retaliation." $16/hr after 3 years and he's got the audacity to talk about commitment. The disrespect is unreal.

    OP ThatOneNerd7 already screenshotted it and backed it up to my personal email. honestly didn't even think about forwarding it up the chain but that's genius. his boss has always seemed reasonable so maybe they'd actually care the $16/hr thing is what gets me. i asked for a raise 6 months ago and got "maybe next quarter." next quarter came and suddenly there's a hiring freeze. but they hired someone new last month at $18. i wasn't supposed to find out but you know how it is

    That-Currency-1039 Even if they don't care morally. The legal risk they take suggesting you don't take a break. Isnt worth a complaint to the labor board.

    OP ThatOneNerd7 that's a good point. like even from a purely selfish business perspective, why would you risk a labor board complaint over someone taking lunch? makes zero sense i looked it up and apparently retaliation for taking legally mandated breaks is taken pretty seriously. might actually be worth filing something, especially since i have the email proof

    Itsme2006 3 years of perfect attendance and they're acting like you're the problem for taking a legally required break? That's not a workplace, that's a hostage situation. The email is just him trying to intimidate you into compliance. Don't fall for it. Keep applying and get out. Places that treat employees like this don't deserve notice either.

    OP ThatOneNerd7 that's exactly what it feels like. like they know the job market is tough right now and they're using that against us the worst part is i used to actually like this job. but ever since they promoted him to manager last year it's been downhill. dude has zero leadership skills, just power trips hopefully one of these applications hits. I'm not even being picky anymore

    OP ThatOneNerd7 places like this always have that unwritten rule about not discussing pay. like they never officially say it but everyone knows you're "not supposed to" talk about it found out through a coworker who saw the new hire's offer letter left on the printer. she was pissed too because she's been here 2 years making less.

    Graveconsequences Send him an e-mail following up on the conversation to ensure that 'you understand the expectations of your position moving forward'. If he's dumb enough to reply you have something to present to your local labor board. If not, he understands that he's dealing with someone who understands how to use his mouth against him and he might back off a little.
