'Now we're the most hated people in our neighborhood': Family tries to return former homeowner’s late parents' heirlooms, but eventually sells them after she refuses contact, until she shows up years later demanding items and entry into their home

We're not quite sure how this family became the villain in this neighborhood drama?… But there is just something about a tight-knit community that makes it difficult for newcomers to replace any long-time homeowners, who have made countless friends and memories in the neighborhood! When you move into a new home, it may take a while to make it feel like yours. But when you eventually do, there's no better feeling. Yet, in some homes, there will still be many traces of the previous owners: heights written against the doorframe, or simply just a few boxes of belongings left behind after the move. Whilst most people would paint the doorframe or throw the away the 'meaningless' boxes…This family thought that returning the previous owner's old belongings was the right thing to do! 

So they called the previous owner's daughter, requesting she come and pick up her late parents' things. But she kept dodging their calls and rejecting any contact. So the family decided to sell the goods instead…However, years later, the woman showed up on their doorstep, absolutely losing it when she learned her parents' belongings had been sold! Not only that, but she, too, began demanding entry into her old home…But when the family refused, feeling cornered by her aggressive attitude, the other (long-time neighbors and friends) began 'banging the door down' alongside her!

  • All in the matter of a week, this family feels like the most hated people in the neighborhood…All for defending themselves against this pushy woman. After all, it's not as if they never tried to get the items back to her, because they did! So if she wanted her late parents' leftover belongings, she could have made the effort to come the first time they called!

    AITA for not letting the previous owner of my house come back in to see it again after she had moved out

    I (25f) have been living at this house with my parents since 2020. This house was built and owned by one family before us.

    The OG owners were a carpenter, his wife, and their daughter. The owner and his friends moved out to the country and built houses all next door to each other in 1976 so them and their families were all super close.

    The owner's wife passed away in 2014 and the daughter moved out in 2015. The guy kept living here by himself until he passed away in 2020.

    Then she called my mom a few explicit words and hung up. After that situation we stopped trying to contact her and we sold the carpentry tools, sold some of the cooking supplies, and we gave the family pictures to the neighbor that we knew was friends with the previous owner.
