  • I originally posted AITAH back when I felt guilty but now... Ok so I(25f) live in a two bed two bath that I originally got with my best friend Beth.
  • We have been in this apartment for literally years. We moved in right after the quarantine ended.
  • It's situated in great neighborhood, spacious, quiet, it gets great light, and it has a washer dryer in unit.
  • It's the kind of apartment that would be out of our price range but we got a great deal on it because of covid.
  • She recent got married and move out so I had to find someone to replace her.
  • That is how I came to live with Van(23f). She's a friend of friend which is the way I usually prefer to find to my roommates.
  • All that to say she was not a complete stranger. I met her once and one of best friends was able to vouch for her.
  • For the first six months things were going great but that was until I went on a work trip.
  • I travel often for work and don't lock my room up or anything like that. Since I lived with friends it's always been fine.
  • About 3 weeks ago when came from a trip. When plopped down on the floor to unpack noticed something between my mattress and mattress pad.
  • There was also a strange snell like sweat or something. I looked closer my bed and realized it was a condom.
  • I recoiled and grabbed napkins to flush it down the toilet. When I asked Van about he shrugged and suggested it might be on mine I just forgot about it.
  • 1. I'm single there and 2. I'm on birth control which I told her. She finally confessed to me that she had been renting out my room on Airbnb whenever I'm away.
  • That's not even the worse part. Apparently she has also been renting out/ offering clothes in my closet and drawers which explains why I found a bunch wet waded pairs of undies under way in the corner next the sink.
  • I was so angry I couldn't speak but Van tried to calm me down saying that she always launders/dry cleans the clothes that were borrowed.
  • She also said that it's nice have the free space to use as an office sometimes or craft room.
  • It got me thinking about how many time she's been in my room. I told that she had no right to just takeover my room when I wasn't here and that if she wanted to do something in my space and borrow my possessions she needed to ask.
  • She nodded a bunch but kept countering about how it's not really a big deal. I also asked her to take down the listing and after much back and forth she threw down an "okay fine" and that was that.

  • I also purchased lock for my door which gave a nice extra level of assurance. a
  • We have three months left on our lease and Van is desperately wants to stay in our building either by finding someone else looking or a roommate or a studio apartment.
  • Her commute is non existent as she can walk to work where we live. That's fair but the part that might have me earned AITA is that I told a few of our neighbors what she did with listing my room and renting my clothes.
  • It definitely poisoned the well on her ability to meet people around the building and find a new roommate.
  • situation. Eventually it got back to the leasing company and now we are under threat of early eviction.
  • What's more is that the leasing office refuses to allow her rent there on her own now.
  • Airbnbs and other types of sub leasing are against the building's policy and results in fines and/or the tenant being put on a blacklist which now we both are.
  • It doesn't effect much since I'm planning to move out state but Van seems to pretty screwed. I tried to give advice or resources to help her but lately she had been short and sarcastic as she blames me for running a good thing and getting us on a black list.
  • Did I mention that we are also blacklisted on buildings owned by the same leasing company around the neighborhood?
  • She's not sure what she is going to do now and blames me. update soon...
