Woman's family books an Airbnb for a vacation to Mexico that is short one room, expects her boyfriend to sleep on the couch: ‘I offered to pay whatever necessary’

When you're the outsider guest on your partner's family trip, it's difficult to say what you can and cannot request from them. On the one hand, you don't want to come across as needy and strike a nerve in the wrong family member. On the other hand, you don't want to settle for less just because there's an unspoken and somewhat outdated rule to settle for less at the expense of your comfort. If you're a guest on their trip, cut the corners and pay for what you need and what they won't accommodate. The 25-year-old man in the story below tries to pay for his share of an Airbnb that doesn't land him on the couch for multiple nights in Mexico, but it seems like they won't even let him spend his "hard-earned" money, so he could at least be comfortable during his stay.

A compromise falls short when one of the parties involved refuses to listen to the other party's concerns. One family might have a cult mentality and view the outside guest as a pest rather than someone who is just as much a guest as they are, especially if they're putting money into the accommodations. What would you do in this situation? Keep quiet, or rescind your role as a guest?

I would thank them and acknowledge that they obviously don't have room for you to tag along and either A: simply not go to the wedding OR B: since you already have a paid plane ticket use the money you've saved to book your own hotel room.
