So I'm closing the restaurant and bar by myself tonight. Sent the last Server home twenty minutes ago, asked them to lock the front before they left. Well, they must have forgot, because I come out of the kitchen surprised that there is a lady at the host stand looking mega-pissed.
  • 03
Me: "Oh, hello! Sorry, I didn't know anyone was in here." Squinty Lady: "Oh, you didn't know? You didn't KNOW?"
  • 04
Me (pause): "No, I didn't know. Unfortunately, we are closed for the evening." SL: "No you're not. There will be four of us and we'll take that table by the fireplace." Me: "Again, apologies, we are closed for the evening."
  • 05
SL: "It's 9:52. You're open til ten." Me: "Miss, we closed ten minutes ago. I can suggest a couple of places--" SL (thrusting phone in my face): "Your website says you're open til ten! Look at your website! You have. to serve us!"
  • 06
Me: "I don't have to look at our website, because I work here, and we are closed. We aren't a corporate restaurant. We close when it's appropriate." SL: "Who's in charge here?" Me (Here we f'ing go...): "I am."
  • 07
SL: "No you're not. Who's your boss?" Me: "The owner." SL (deadass): "Get him." Me: "No, ma'am." SL: "What?! Get him out here, NOW."
  • 08
Me: "No, ma'am." SL: "Are you telling me no?" Me (seriously losing patience now): "Yes, twice I told you no, because he is not here. I can not get him."
  • 09
SL: "Give me his phone number." Me: "No." SL: "Why not?!" Me: "Give me your phone number."

Woman in black shirt and woman in white shirt sit at restaurant with plates of food in front of them and smile at person in front of them
  • 11
SL (appalled): "Absolutely not!" Me: "Same reason." SL: "Then get your cellphone and call him, and let me talk to him."
  • 12
Me: "I am not calling the owner at ten o'clock—" SL: "9:52!" Me: "I am not calling the owner on my cellphone and giving you my cellphone to talk to the owner. At 9:52. We're closed."

And here's where the tragic and the magic happens. She appears lost, defeated. Out of options. She sputters a little, looks around, but there's no one, nothing to cling to. She's desperate, needy, has to salvage this somehow and win this encounter. But how? And then, deus ex machina, it comes to her. Her eyes flicker, her shoulders puff, the corners of her mouth turn ever so slightly up. She locks eyes with me. ☑

She locks eyes with me. SL: "...I'm going to leave you a bad Yelp review." Me (pause): "Did...did you just threaten me with Yelp?" SL (dramatically turning to exit): "You did this to yourself."

People loved this story, and largely agreed with the waiter's decision

wyfromto Technically, "we close at 10pm" means you can kick them out at 10pm.

bananaskill I love when they threaten a review. I make sure they know my name. Two can play this game, babes.

rkatkdwjrdls people love to ask for the manager's/owner's phone number as if it isn't private information THEY themselves wouldn't give out to random strangers
  • 18
erinl.blackburn I can't believe people were raised to behave like this. I'd be apologising 100x if I came in at this time before closing and I'd wish the servers a good night like wtf.

unicorniogotico0918 Oh i would had lead this conversation for the longest 8 minutes of my life and when it hit 10 o'clock i would go "oh look, its 10, we are closed, good bye!"

bdgrey01 Next time just tell him/her the kitchen already went home and no one is left who can cook. Kitchen is usually out of there before the bar in a restaurant like this anyways.
