18 Construction laborers attend annual Christmas lunch expecting usual gifts and bonuses, but receive nothing with no explanation from management: ‘No speech, no card, no gift, no thank you, nothing’

Let me start off completely off point with a note to my beloved manager Brad: A Yeti cup, a Carhartt hoodie, and $1000 is all I want for Christmas.

Now that we got that point across (Ahem ahem, Brad), we can move on to what's actually happening in the sad yet unsurprising situation our hard-working construction worker is sharing. And if you ask me, even though there are a couple of things at play here, first and foremost, it's the usual clash between expectations and reality.

Now, I'm not preaching to anyone to become a lone, emotionally self-sufficient wolf, if anything, I would generally suggest the opposite. I'm not for all the anti-codependency stuff, we're human, that's part of how we operate - It takes a village and all that. But I'm just saying, expecting opens a door to disappointment. Especially when it's work-related, so to sum up what I'm saying i'll just quote the great Charlie Daniels, who sang: "I ain't asking nobody for nothin' If I can't get it on my own."

  • So I hope I've established the idea that expectation creates its own gravity, but at this company Christmas lunch, it crushed the room flat. Every December, the construction crew showed up not just for food or the bonus but for the rhythm of the ritual itself. The vice president usually played host, giving that end-of-year speech about teamwork and gratitude that everyone politely clapped through, then passing out gifts and envelopes that turned fatigue into something resembling pride. This year, nothing. Just the sound of silverware and confusion. The ceremony collapsed, and with it the illusion that good work would always be met with goodwill.

  • I work for a construction company, and every year we (18 Laborers) meet with our managers, as well as the vice president for a Christmas lunch.

  • The VP usually gives us a brief speech toward the end expressing appreciation for our hard work throughout the year etc, and hands everyone a small gift bag containing for example a Yeti cup, Carhartt hoodie etc, a Xmas card signed by the owner..and a bonus check ranging around $500-$1000 which to me generous and we are always so thankful.

The workers kept looking for the cues they had come to expect: the speech, the thank you, the human touch, and got a corporate freeze instead.

  • They knew.. they knew we were excited for this moment. I will also add that all of us laborers pitched in $50 for a custom made gift for the owner, as we do each year..Which makes this even more unsettling.

  • So these workers just faced the understanding that pretty much all of us face at some point, and that is that effort does not equal appreciation. The new rule that expectation is just something to manage, not respect. Reality may be colder, but at least now it is honest.

  • JegHusker I've seen this behavior before and "leadership" felt guilty about coming layoffs, though we didn't know that was the reason for the cold shoulder at the time. Other times it happened when the company was secretly being acquired or merged. Cutting costs to look pretty for suitors. I hope this is not the case for you OP. Can't hurt to see what's out there, and check in with your union if you have one.

  • [deleted] If the owners are good people, they may have been devastated at their current financial position and may have wanted to tell you, but just couldn't. There are few people who can stand up in front of their employees and say I'm sorry, then admit their failures. Very, very few people. If they've truly been good to you, I wouldn't give them any grief right now and see what happens after Christmas. I'm sorry this is happening and I hope that they are able to turn the company around before
