The cat's reaction to her owner tells you everything that you need to know about their relationship. Cats don't react like this for no reason. The fact that this cat behaves so differently with you than with the owner is another problem. Cats are not “mean” for no reason either. There is always a reason, and in this case, it is very much clear that she would rather be with you than with the person who stresses her out to the point that she lashes out.

Honestly, we think that you did the right thing. There's a part of us that thought, at the very beginning, that you should have given the owner yet another chance. But you're right - enough is enough. The cat could not have been clearer about the choice that she made when she came back to you after those 12 hours. Giving her back to the owner once again might have meant that she would not have been able to come back to you a third time, and that was not something worth risking. Keep her a secret if you must. You are doing the right thing for her.
