You can't explain what it feels like to have a pet to someone who has never had a pet before.

A pet owner's relationship with their beloved pet is something special that is genuinely difficult to explain. They're not your child, but they are also kind of are. You love them with all of your heart, and you would do anything for them, often choosing them over most of the boring humans you know. How can you explain these feelings to someone who has never loved a pet before? It's basically impossible.

That being said, you don't really have to explain yourself to anyone. People are entitled to love and take care of their pets however they see fit, even if others don't truly understand it. So if you want to dedicate a whole room in your home to your pet, or if you want to buy them colorful outfits and parade them around town, absolutely go for it. Nobody can stop you, even if they silently (or not so silently) judge you for it.

However, if you decide to involve yourself with someone who has never owned a pet before, you should be ready to face some raised eyebrows and even a few judgmental words.

That is what happened to the pet owner in the story below. She has a dog she loves very much and a boyfriend who has never owned one before. When she decided to buy her beloved pet a few clothes for the winter season, her boyfriend decided to tell her that she was crossing some lines in his mind. Dogs shouldn't own clothes, he claims; clothes are only for humans.

Well, Mr. boyfriend, you don't get to make that call. If your girlfriend wants to buy some fun clothes for her dog, whom she loves and cares for, there is nothing that you can do or say to stop her. In fact, your weird attitude towards something so innocent and fun is simply a red flag, and could very well lead to you being single in 2026.

  • Maleficent-Hawk-318 It doesn't really bother me when people say that to me, but tbh I don't think I could be in a romantic relationship with someone who thinks that way. My dogs are too important to me, and the differing attitudes are likely to keep causing issues down the line. Plus it's kind of a jerk move to belittle something harmless and fun that your partner enjoys, and dressing up your dog in cute accessories qualifies as harmless fun in my book. Not something I personally really do, but

  • oceanduciel I'm personally of the opinion that dogs don't need clothes unless the situation calls for it (extreme weather, recovery from injury, surgery or illness) but I also don't police other people's decisions about their dogs as long as the dogs are happy and healthy.

  • MyMango88 "It's just a dog". Ummm. NO. They have feelings, they have emotions, they eat and relieve themselves. They get hot and they get cold and they get thirsty and they rely on humans to care for them and make good choices for them. My dogs have an entire seasonal wardrobe! Whether anyone likes it or not my circle gets smaller and smaller as I get older (unless they're dogs!)

  • Working-Addendum-28 Well, probably going against the general trend on this but clothes for dogs? Sorry, anything beyond a jumper or similar to keep them warm on cold days, no way. Its undignified to dress a dog in 'human' outfits. They are not fashion accessories. Yes, they are more than 'just a dog', I agree wholeheartedly, but they are also sentient creatures with a great deal of dignity, and to treat them like some dress-up doll is demeaning. Same for having their fur dyed.
