One of the things that we have learned throughout our years as cat owners is that cats have just as much of a routine as we do, if not more. Cats like to wake up at a specific time, they like to be fed right after they do, they drink at around the same time, they like to cuddle in certain ways. They're consistent, and we are just living around their routines. And if that routine is broken, for any reason, they are displeased. You can see it on their little faces. You better have a good reason for it. And even if you do, it's probably not good enough.

A strange sleeping schedule is unsettling for us too, so can you really blame him? Imagine you are used to going to sleep at 10 p.m. and suddenly you start going to sleep at 1 a.m. multiple days in a row. Horrific, right? Awful. The same is true for cats. Except they don't need a three-hour change for their sleeping schedule to be disturbed. They need about thirty minutes. If you are late to bed, then basically their whole day is ruined, and they will let you know about it. Shamelessly and very loudly.

Husband and wife slowly realize that their ginger cat hilariously tucks them into bed every night, and is very miffed when they don't go along with him: 'Toad doesn’t even sleep in our bed!'
Cats have very strict routines, and straying from them will end with consequences.
This is something that we had to learn the hard way as cat owners. We didn't know how important a cat's routine is to them. And it doesn't matter how funny that routine might be. Sure, you have the obvious things - cats wanting to be fed right after waking up, cats requiring that you open the faucet for them at specific hours, cats climbing into their favorite sunspot every single day. But it can also be much funnier things, like the cat who needs his emotional support snap peas everywhere that he goes, or the cat who loves watching the Grinch every time her owners do chores, or like our cat who demands to sit on top of our computer right as we start typing on them for work.
And then there is Toad. Toad is a cat who likes going to bed on time. It's clearly very important to him. Of course, his owners had no way of knowing just how impurrtant that truly was to him until they suddenly strayed, going to bed at a different hour than he is used to. But he made sure to let them know about their mistake - loudly and repeatedly.
