Dude cuts up and eats his roommate's pineapple because she bought it on December 19th: 'She has a history of leaving fruit on the shelves until it goes bad.'

He should've asked, but she shouldn't be leaving half-rotted fruit out.

I've been a roommate for nearly eight years now, and in that time, I've learned that all the hard-and-fast "roommate rules" don't always apply. The rule "never touch your roommates' things" makes sense in concept, but if your roommate is constantly leaving rotting food in the fridge and never throws it away, it's probably okay for you to break that rule. It's unsafe for everybody in the house to have moldy food near food that's going to get eaten, and you shouldn't have to ask your roommate permission to toss a green loaf of bread that was white a month ago.

When you have a roommate who constantly neglects their fruits and vegetables, letting them rot and leaving you to clean up the mess, you might start to notice when their strawberries are on the verge of turning white and fuzzy. It's only human to think, "My roommate is not going to eat these ripe strawberries because they never eat their fruit before it rots. Maybe I could eat some without them noticing." I'm not saying this is right, but if you're sensitive to food waste, it's not an unreasonable thought! Best practice is always to ask your roommate if you can eat their food before you eat it. Some people would clutch their pearls at the mere concept of their roommate borrowing an egg from them, but most people don't care about occasionally sharing food with the people with whom they share a refrigerator.

  • OP K-Pumper Very true. I should have done that, I'd just gotten home from work and it was like 1AM and I had energy and she was asleep. So I neglected to ask. I also overlooked that others feel differently about their stuff in the house than I do. As a household we all share things like spices, olive oil, butter.... and just take turns buying it And my other roommate and I buy separate groceries, but are very lax about our stuff. If there's beers in the fridge, fruit, eggs, milk, LaCroix, rice..

  • Trenin23 FYI - pineapples do not ripen after they've been picked. That is why you should never select an unripe pineapple from the store because it will go directly from unripe to rotten.

  • rocjard Soft YTA since you didn't ask beforehand. I'd get annoyed too if I had a roommate with a habit of letting food spoil like this, but I would still ask before doing anything with it.

  • jmgolden33 I mean you ate 1/3 of her pineapple, so it's kind of funny that you just nonchalantly justify this by saying it was on its way out. It was obviously edible and enticing enough for you to eat! Also the fact that they are annoyed over a few dollar pineapple tells me that you don't have a clean track record with them. YTA

  • ESH. 1962Michael She's an AH for leaving fruit out to rot on the counter. Repeatedly. However, you're still an AH for not asking her if it was OK for you to cut it up. Cutting it up for her and throwing out the bad stuff was arguably doing her a favor. But it's no longer a favor if you ate half of what was left, with out asking.
