It's always a good idea to have a backup plan, but few of us actually do.

It's easy to get tunnel-visioned about what we're doing at any particular moment. We're locked in, and it's hard to see the forest for the trees. But then something will come along, and you wish you had thought a little broader. This happens all the time in the workplace. You're trotting along, doing your job, and then your workplace makes a change that you can't abide by. But you're stuck, having no backup plan. Sure, you can try to come up with one now, but it almost feels too late.

There seems to be a big push in offices around the country to return to the office. After years of remote and hybrid work, some companies are walking it back and prioritizing in-person work. But many employees have gotten used to the flow of remote work, and have seen the ways it has improved their quality of life. It saves them time and money on a commute, it frees them up to make lunch instead of having to purchase it, and it adds just a touch of flexibility to life, which is something that everyone needs more of. The way the companies see it, though, it's valuable to have everyone in the same room at the same time. It fosters conversations and relationship building. But either way, you have to get people used to the idea. Going from 0 to 100 is a pretty big leap.

  • That's what happened in this company, and one worker had a lot to say about it. After years of working his position fully remote, he had gotten used to that lifestyle. Then, all of a sudden, he was required to report to the office 5 days a week. That's a pretty big lifestyle change-up. But he had a plan B, and he saw it as his time to use it.   • Now, the hammer just dropped: In 2026, they are mandating a full 5- day-a-week return to the office. No hybrid. No flexibility. Just 100% ass-in-seat. I genuinely do not understand the mindset of forcing people like cattle into a building they don't want to be in, just so executives can parade around their commercial real estate investment. The work hasn't changed. The only thing that's changed is their desire for control.

I started a side hustle and have been grinding on it pretty hard for the last few years. So, instead of falling in line and wasting hours of my life. commuting again, I'm pivoting. I'm taking my side hustle full-time and

If I were you I'd just keep working from home doing the bare minimum until you get fired to squeeze out some extra paychecks (and even maybe some severance, but not likely). You already have an established side hustle so you can just mostly work on that while you're home

Im hoping a lot of these companies lose all their talent and go bankrupt. Unfortunately the ppl at the top will still have their millions.

They got paid their wage while building their own business and are now ready to step into it full time. Thats great! Who cares if OP quitting is what the company wants - its also what OP wants.

  • GroinReaper You aren't really sticking it to them. These mandates are, in large part, a way of firing people and not paying severance. I encourage you to do what's best for you. But you're kind of doing what they want.

When a company lays off a certain percentage of workers in order to cut labor costs, the smart, capable employees see the writing on the wall, so they immediately begin looking elsewhere for a new job and soon leave. The not so smart, not so capable employees stay because they can't get a better job.

  • Groovychick1978 Continue with your normal duties at home until they fire you. Do not quit. This is a known tactic to force attrition. They want people to quit. If you quit, their metrics stay good. Better even. Make them fire you. Continue your job at home.

  • eightfingeredtypist Ease out, don't rage quit. Work part time as a contractor, no benefits, or whatever works best for you. The planning you did is important. You should have a business plan. That format brings reality to the dream of being self employed.
