Cats are incredibly resilient animals. They are brave. They face any challenge that comes their way head-on. But in a world full of humans and unexpected things, even the bravest wildcat can be caught off guard. And unfortunately, that is what happened to Estanislao Monte. According to AUBTU, in Argentina, Estanislao Monte means “always standing”, and that is the name that was given by a rescuer to a baby puma cub living at the Pumakawa Animal Reserve. That name was given as a wish - a hope that even after all the hardships that the cub faced, the baby would grow strong, confident and happy.

Estanislao grew up as a perfectly healthy baby puma, living his life with his family in the wild, until the day came when he was in a terrible accident. As he and his siblings were crossing a cornfield for food hunting, they were suddenly hit by a big harvester. The rest of the cubs were carried away by their concerned momma, but Estanislao was left behind. Thankfully, Kai Pacha, the leader of Pumakawa Animal Reserve, was there to help him. After assessing the situation in the field, the kind woman decided that she had to bring the abandoned puma back to the shelter and help him in whatever ways she could.

Unfortunately, the puma cub had lost its ability to see, and therefore, could not be released into the wild. But it does not mean that he couldn't live an amazing life anyway. “Estanislao could not survive in nature, so our challenge is to find a way for him to live comfortably. To find the techniques and strategies for his needs,” shared Kai on Instagram. After his wounds were healed, Estanislao started his new life with his caretaker Kai Pacha and her dog Mojo. Although he couldn't go back to his old family, he found a new one who love him just as much.

It took some time and a lot of care and love, but the puma ended up growing happily despite being blind. He is now confidently walking around, comfortable and content. He even helps out with other baby puma cubs when they come into the rescue. “My blindness is not dark because you are there. No one is in the black night while they have the sun of another heart by their side.” – shared the Instagram page, and we would not agree more.

Blind puma cub is abandoned by his mom after a tragic accident that left him blind, but thankfully, he's rescued by a kind woman who brings him to a shelter, where he befriends a dog and becomes a foster parent to other cubs
Life as a wild cat in a world full of humans is full of challenges.
When we think about wild cats, we like to imagine them free, roaming forests, savannahs or moutains, searching for food and shelter without interruption. But that is not always the case. Sometimes, they encounter civilization, and that can lead to all kinds of problems. It's what happened to the puma that we'll be talking about today. It was a tragic accident involving a careless driver that caused this puma cub to go blind, and since that point, everything changed for him.
Of course, the same way that we sometimes cause these issues for wild cats, we are also the ones who are capable of helping them - of giving them a new life and a purpose. And we're happy to say that we actually do that for them every once in a while. We've seen that in a special needs lion who was born with a rare disorder becoming best friends with an itty bitty daschhound. We've seen that in a rescued bobcat becoming a foster mom to other bobcats after being deemed unable to go back into the wild herself. We have seen that in a rescued mountain lion enjoying life as a house cat, loved and spoiled like any other kitty, having been saved by humans after an accident.
We try our best, we really do. And with the little puma in this story… Although it was a human's fault that this happened to him. It was also a human who saved his life, brought him to a shelter, and gave him a second chance at happiness. And now, he's surrounded by a human who loves him, a dog who is his best friend, and a bunch of other puma cubs who he helps grow before their own release back into the wild.
