6 months of ‘model behavior’ is ignored after employee is 8 minutes late, boss takes away her breaks for the day so she leaves for lunch and never returns: ‘I clocked out and went “to the deli”… I quit.'

This employee pulled the 'ole switcheroo where she told her entitled boss she was going to lunch, but really she was quitting and never returned. Epic! 

We love when an under-appreciated employee takes a boss' entitlement and shoves it where the sun don't shine. In this case it was a new employee who had been a model employee since her start. It was only six months in and she was already starting to reach the end of the rope with this job. Still, she always put her best foot forward and made sure to stay an exemplary employee as not to burn any bridges. 

However, one day, due to personal reasons, she ended up being no more than eight minutes late. Only eight minutes, not even ten. The amount of tardiness is so inconsequential that she didn't even think it necessary to call in and let them know that she was running a little late. She figured it would be fine. 

Unfortunately, her entitled boss must have been waiting for any kind of slip-up, because he immediately pulled her into his office and let her have it. She tried to explain her side, but no, he was not having it. He told her that because of her lateness, she was not allowed to take her lunch break…

  • Her boss forbade her from taking any breaks, actually. Now that sounds illegal to us…. But an entitled boss is going to do whatever they want. However, she was able to convince him to at least let her run out to grab a snack of sorts to eat later so she doesn't crash during her shift. He reluctantly allowed it but said he was going to doc her pay for 30 minutes. 

    This was truly the end of this employee's rope. So instead of rushing to get a snack and then back to work, she simply never returned. He kept calling her and calling her, but she didn't answer. Finally, two hours later she answered and simply told him that she would not be returning because she quit. 

    If you're going to act like an entitled boss who has no respect or empathy for their employees, then be prepared for your employees to quit with no respect or empathy for you. That's just how karma works, bestie.

    So I just walked out on my job. After 6 months of being a model employee I'm talking always 10 minutes early, never called out once I had a morning where everything that could go wrong, did.

  • Gigi0268 In Kansas, they suck. There are no laws requiring a lunch break. I used to work 8 hours alone with no break. So unless it's a company policy, they don't have to give you a break.

My apprentice was running late and called to let us know. My manager was always a dick and would make adjustments to people's times. My apprentice said he had just over slept and was running 15 minutes late.   • john_carlton2 Presuming OP is located in the United States, your boss pulled an entirely illegal move. Your lunch break and work breaks are mandated by law based on how many hours you're scheduled for. You being late to work by 8 minutes (seriously? the boss was worked up over 8 minutes?) does not relieve your employer of their duty to provide you the legally mandated lunch break.
