  • "[Am I wrong] for protecting my paternal grandmother's jewelry from my maternal cousin?"

1 (28 years old F) have a cousin (25years old M) named Eric. Eric and i used to be close as relatives but in time,we lost every contact.
  • Years pass by and Eric found my mother's phone number. My mother was thrilled to hear news from Eric, from his grandmother and from his mother.
  • My mother it's the elder sister of Eric's mother which makes him my 1st degree cousin.
  • After a while, Eric, his mother Nina and his grandmother Julia paid us a visit together with Eric's lover named Miranda (18 years old F).
  • Everything goes well until i received a message from my workplace that a meeting occured and that i need to be there asap, in that moment i had no choice but to let my parents to know that i have to go to a meeting at my workplace so i went to my room and start to get ready.
  • While i was doing my makeup at the bathroom,i realised that i needed a hairclip from my room, when i went there i caught Miranda snooping through my heirloom jewelry that i received from my paternal grandmother that passed away years ago.
  • I asked her what she was doing in my jewelry box and she said that my mother let her have a look in my stuff and take whatever she wants.
  • I was so p d at this point. I stormed towards her, grab the pieces from her,put them back into the box and kick her out of my room telling her that i will call the police.
  • Miranda ran crying to Eric,Nina, Julia and to my mother telling them that i will call the police on her.
  • My mother start yelling at me telling me that the jewelry that i have it's kept in my jewelry box in vain and that i should share them with the family.
  • I said that those jewelry pieces are my jewelry pieces from my grandmother's from my father side and that Eric and his family have no right.
  • They left my house giving me bad eyes and my mother doesn't speak to me.
  • A brown-haired woman apologies to a blonde woman, who looks away dismissively as the two sit on a couch.
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply This is not the first time that my jewelry was involved in such things . My mother gave to another cousin of mine some of my jewelry and months later, that cousin came and she told me that i gave her broken and cheap things
  • Usual-Canary-7764 Well you can now remove Eric from your life for the long foreseeable future. NTA ETA: Hide that box. Your mom already tried to give them to Miranda once...she will try to get it herself again. This one is going to come back
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I have tried multiple times to tell her that i do not want people in my room
  • mca2021 Until you get your own place, get a safety deposit box at the bank and put it there so they have zero access to it. If that's not an option, then get a good lockbox for your home. NTA, shame on your mom for giving stuff away that doesn't belong to her, nor her side of the family
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I will get it and have my lawyer informed
  • JustAH kerAtHeart And it's obvious she doesn't listen. Get the safe deposit box before it's too late.
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I am thinking of hiding them well and buy a safe deposit box. My mother always like the jewelry that i have and she favorites some of her nephews and nieces.
  • Nemphedisis NTA but you may need to move the jewelry you don't want to lose to a different place, maybe to some friends that you trust? Because I can see the pieces "randomly" disappearing one day, with everyone being like "oh no, I wonder where that could have disappeared to. Anyways-" So yeah. Hide all of those items. Also Eric's 25 and dating an 18 yo? Gross
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I hate when my mom look let other relatives look through my stuff. Even let one of my cousin to wear my clothes. After that i had to double wash them
  • 2ndBestAtEverything Also, move out ASAP. Your mother is untrustworthy.
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I am really going to put them in a safe deposit box and also inform my lawyer about the events.
  • Valuable-Job-7956 NTA Go get safety deposit box today because if you don't the next time you see that jewelry she will be wearing it
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I am really gonna get a safe box and hide it well
  • Nemphedisis Then trust your instincts and get a safety box. You may need to hide the box as well honestly, depending on how much she favors your cousins, she may just hand over the box so they can try and destroy it. People have gone to further lengths than that in the name of favoritism.
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I am getting them locked in the safe deposit box and look for somewhere to move.
  • Familiar Cheetah4792 Your mother had absolutely no right to do what she did. In fact, it truly takes my breath away that she opened up your possessions to ANYone, much less the 18-year-old GF of a newly discovered relative. There's something wrong with your mother (I get this from reading your responses below)---you need to protect your possessions with locked boxes or getting them off the premises. By 28 years old you should be living elsewhere.
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply U gave me an idea of changing the locks of my room too
  • shackndon2020 Find a way to lock your wardrobe and keep your jewelry in there in a mini safe, then both your clothes and valuables are safe from your mother
  • asianimmortalgoddess Original Poster's Reply I think she would even move the bed away just to find it
  • galliumsilver Do so, but hide the box now, until you can get it into the safe deposit box. If your mom finds out I'm telling you, she will just go in your room and grab it.
