'We never had a desire to have a cat, but we both felt like we couldn't leave it’: Rescuing a Bengal in Spain blossomed into an unexpected bond that turned two devoted dog pawrents into cat people

They weren't looking for a cat, but they couldn't ignore one who needed help.

These folks were dog people, through and through, and never intended to have a cat. But in southern Spain, they kept seeing two cats confined to a small outdoor cage in someone's garden, left there day after day. One was clearly underweight, and eventually, walking past stopped feeling possible. After talking with the owner, they took in the thinner cat. It wasn't meant to be permanent. Just a way to get him out of a bad situation and give him a chance.

Once inside, he surprised them. He's affectionate, cuddly, and clearly loves being close to people. Most of the time, he's an absolute sweetheart who seems grateful just to be warm and cared for. He also has a second mode. High-energy, mischievous, and occasionally destructive. About 30 percent menace, as they describe it. It's been a learning curve, especially in a home with dogs and limited space.

They've put in real effort. Leash training, long play sessions, teaching tricks, finding ways to channel his energy, and helping him slowly learn how to coexist with the dogs. Some days feel manageable, even joyful. Other days feel overwhelming. The uncertainty is the hardest part.

What stands out most is how much care is already here. This cat is safe, loved, and given far more patience than he ever had before. Whether he stays or eventually finds another home, his life is already better because someone chose to step in.

    We're so conflicted on whether to keep him or not. We're not sure whether we'll be able to get to a point where we can handle his menace mode. He actually really stresses us out often (he has broken a bunch of thing already), but the idea of of rehoming him makes us feel sick too.

    Second, Bengals are extremely high-energy, and if you don't feel like you can manage that long-term, it may be best to start looking for a good home for him now. Their energy levels usually don't slow down over time, so it likely won't get easier (lol).

  • Bengals are pure energy wrapped in a beautiful coat. They’re busy, curious, and always on the move, which can feel like a lot at times. But if you can keep up with them and give them what they need, the payoff is incredible. They’re smart, affectionate, and deeply engaging cats who form strong bonds with their people. The energy is real, but so is the reward.

  • Huskies and Bengals are basically running on the same operating system. Endless energy, big personalities, and absolutely no interest in being ignored. They’re smart, loud in their own ways, and always looking for something to do. If you’re used to a husky, a Bengal probably feels familiar. Equal parts chaos, charm, and heart, with a strong need for attention and stimulation.
