Parents call the police every time their 19-year-old college student daughter goes dark on Life360: ‘I feel like I'm being suffocated’

If you don't let your child spread their wings and fly, they'll never learn… and it'll be your fault.

Helicopter parents aren't a new phenomenon. Sure, most kids born in the late 20th century raised themselves, and only had to be home for supper each evening. However, there were also a few parents here and there who would watch their child's movements like a hawk. The answer to this, of course, is finding a healthy balance of the two. Check in with your 11-year-old at the park to ask them if they're ready for the sandwich you brought for lunch. But also, let them fall on the floor and get a scrape on their knee because they were doing the monkey bars too quickly. How else will we allow the children of today to become the leaders of tomorrow if we, as parents, are calling the authorities each time their location turns off?

When parents send their children off to college, they often struggle with either not reaching out enough or checking in way too much. They ask their kids why they spend so much time at the dining hall, and their child has to reply with, "How do you know that?" The answer: Location-sharing apps.   • It's challenging to set a healthy boundary when the person you're trying to set boundaries with is emotionally manipulative. How do you reconcile the fact that your parent, who should want what's best for you, is actually only looking out for themselves and their worries?

    Short answer: You can't. There is no reconciliation when one party is incapable of recognizing their own faults. Now, the college student is stuck between a rock and a hard place because their mother fails to understand her perspective. If only she had two phones… Wait! That's an idea…

  • SoftHeart_Strong Mind I don't know what normal is, but I will tell you it's not healthy. You need to be able to grow up and be your own person. If I were you, I would start letting my phone die now and then. I would create scenarios where they knew that I would not be seen on Life360. I would slowly pull away from my parents expectation that they are gonna know where I am 100% of the time. It's not healthy for them and it's not healthy for you!!!

  • OP GoldenKashy I want to do this so bad, but I'm terrified. The last time my phone died, my dad literally called campus security to check on me. plus, they pay my tuition. They've hinted that if I 'cut them out' (aka turn off tracking), they'll stop paying for school. I feel like I have to choose between my privacy and my degree. Do you think it's worth risking the financial support?

  • Elijah2807 This is emotional (and financial) blackmail in its purest form. I would very clearly tell them that if they keep this up, the result will be an estranged daughter. You will end up resenting them, cutting them out, and possibly never speak to them again. The writing is on the wall. Then you should try to come to an agreement of what is reasonable (e.g. as long as you are on campus, everything is fine. You'll send them a daily text. You'll let them know if you go off campus at night. So

Calling campus security because your phone died is helicopter parenting on steroids Most college kids I know either don't have location tracking at all or their parents maybe check it like once a week max. 20 minutes is literally nothing - people lose signal, phones die, apps glitch constantly You're 19 and living on campus, not a missing person every time Life360 hiccups. Maybe try having a convo about setting some boundaries before

  • akulowaty It's not normal. 10 years ago they wouldn't have that kind of tech and would rely on your daily phonecalls to know you're still alive. Check out S4E2 "Arkangel" of "Black Mirror" (it's on Netflix), it's basically about your parents but in more technologically advanced world.
