Who could ignore a new puppy?

It's not easy to take on new responsibilities, regardless of what they are. And when we're young, it's even more work to take on new responsibilities. Getting a puppy isn't the same as having a kid, but it surely is a completely new set of responsibilities to do. You have to train it in everyway, watch its every move, and know that you won't have as much free time as you want. Training a puppy is one of those experiences that looks adorable from the outside, but won't necessarily be the same amount of adorable and carefree when you actually get the puppy. You can just imagine snuggling a cute and floofy pup, taking it places and having people comment on how cute he is. But instead, you are have to deal with chewed furniture, potty training, and a tiny creature who seems deeply committed to chaos. Puppies are sweet, but they are also impulsive, curious, and entirely unfamiliar with the rules of human life.

One of the hardest parts of training a puppy is patience. Puppies don't understand why some things are allowed and others aren't. To them, everything is new and fascinating—shoes, cords, plants, hands. They learn through trial and error, which means mistakes happen constantly. Progress can feel painfully slow, especially when you're repeating the same command for the tenth time in a row with no visible results. The puppy owner in the story committed himself to the pup right away, but over time, he fell back on responsibilities. His girlfriend noticed, and got worried.

I remember when my parents first got our puppy. I was in first grade, around 6-years-old. It was a little German Shepard, and his name was Gustafa. It was named after a character in a video game I liked to play back then called, Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life. If there was one thing in my childhood that taught me about responsibility, it was getting that puppy. Even though I was so young, I was so attached to little Gustafa that I wanted to do everything I could to take care of him. I would come home after school and try to train him, love him, walk him, and hang out. During the day, my parents would be with him working from home and training him. It wasn't easy, but after some time he really grew into a well-behaved dog.
