The biggest divas you'll come across at the vast majority of weddings are never the people getting married. 

In fact, it's usually a needy friend who has to feel special, a sibling who is trying not to feel jealous or bitter, or a parent who feels entitled to anything they want. The lattermost example is especially common if said parent contributed money to the event. 

I'll never forget coming to the realization at my college graduation that this weekend was not actually about me. It was just as much about my parents getting to celebrate their accomplishment as well, if not more so. In hindsight, I can understand that mentality because their contributions, both literal and emotional, were a crucial part of allowing me to even experience college. 

However, I do think that when it comes to weddings, the same mentality does not exactly apply. Weddings should, first and foremost, be a celebration of the central romantic relationship. That should be a self-explanatory point. However, when parents start to insist on how a wedding should or shouldn't look, who should or shouldn't be invited, and what everyone should or shouldn't wear or eat, the focus is immediately taken away from the couple at the center and directed toward the parents on the sidelines. Even if they are footing a portion of the bill, they should be granted a few preferences but at the end of the day, their contributions should, in my opinion, be unconditional and in support of what the couple wants.

This bride had to confront her mother about this very problem, and the consequences were not pretty.
