Employee confronts upper management for mishandling his schedule, boss refuses to be held accountable: 'They threatened to fire me if I expressed myself “that way” again.'

There is an art to calling upper management out on their nonsense.

There comes a point in one's working life when one feels the need to stand one's ground and refuse to be taken advantage of any longer by upper management. On the one hand, some folks might be in financial positions where they can quit on the spot and get by for an uncertain period of time without employment. They might even have enough business contacts that they can afford to burn bridges and say exactly what they truly feel. For most employees, however, that level of unembellished honesty is hard to get away with in the workplace.

Most folks have to do a dance when they're trying to confront their superiors about poor management. This often requires softening the blow with kind-hearted, ego-stroking sentiments. One has to start with showering appreciation for all the work management does before dropping the truth about what one is advocating for moving forward.

However, even with the most expertly handled confrontations, there will always be managers who cannot seem to handle that truth. Accountability is not easy for anyone to hold themselves to, especially those in power who are too stuck inside their own experiences. This employee may not have navigated his confrontation perfectly, but his manager's refusal to be held accountable led to consequences that were even more reflective of toxic workplace behavior.

We extend our sympathies to the author of this story, who must have felt dejected after this unfortunate conversation with his manager. At the end of the day, fragile egos often get in the way of decent professionalism and good business. This boss may have had the benefit of power on his side this time around, but we can't help but feel that his time will be up eventually. After all, his behavior is only going to lead to more enemies than allies.
As for the employee, here's hoping he gets the heck out of that workplace environment as soon as possible. As someone said in the comments section, if you're feeling mistreated at work, chances are there is a better place for you out there. You just haven't found it yet!
