26-year-old GF leaves 27-year-old BF after he pays $18,500 for 140 pound cheese wheel: 'She... wasn't happy about how I spent my share of our house savings'

This man thought he'd be raking in the cheddar after purchasing an $18,5000 cheese wheel, but he's now realizing he has 0 idea how to sell off this huge purchase.

People love a good side hustle — it can feel like the only way to actually accomplish your life goals. Even if you have a full time job with a good salary, it's not like you can afford a house or retirement that way. If you do want those things, you can try being born rich, or if you're past that point, you can save money like your life depends on it. You'll have to squeeze every dollar, combine your finances with your partner, and make a serious, concerted effort to save over the course of years. It'll be worth the wait when you finally do accomplish your financial goals!

However, this guy squandered he and his girlfriend's money in one of the funniest ways I've ever heard of. This is truly one of my favorite stories of the year so far! He had a brilliant plan to purchase a giant cheese wheel, then resell it in chunks. Hmm, okay, not a terrible plan on first thought. But, as commenters urged him to consider, who exactly would he be selling this cheese to? Does he have a vendor's booth, a business, even a few chefs to connect with? No. Probably not. Who in the world is going to buy random cheese from some dude off the street? Is he going to post it on Facebook Marketplace? The line of questioning gets funnier and funnier the more you consider it. 

Commenters — 2,000+ of them! — banded together to lob questions at the cheese buyer. One person pointed out that this guy needs a food safety license to properly slice and wrap this thing. Does he have that? Nope! Another person pointed out that his plan to slice the cheese then freeze it was um… just a terrible plan! Who is going to want cheese that's been properly aged, then cracked open and popped in a freezer, then sold by a random Canadian? 

This is one of the rare stories where the comments are possibly funnier than the story itself. They're a must-read; the story of an inadvertent cheesemonger realizing that he cannot even crack open his own very expensive, swiftly-perishing cheese wheel! 

When a commenter asks how it tastes, he admits that he hasn't managed to break through the thick wax of it. Using a hair dryer and other tools, he's been trying to get into the wheel, but I wonder if heating the sealed cheese will only spoil it faster. He gets downvoted to oblivion as comment after comment reveals how unprepared he is for this commitment. I am hoping that the cheese master here gives us an update, since you know, the clock is really ticking. Though I think his GF made the right choice by leaving him for his humiliating money issues, I'm rooting for him to pull off a profit from this somehow!

    It was aged using a traditional cloth bound method Thats practically extinct here in Canada, and with over 21 years it is extremely concentrated.

    Problems are already arising...

    If I cut it into 200g wedges and sell it at 60$ each I can make 38,000$.

    Who wants to pay $120 for a pound of cheese? For scale, if you ever go to the cheese section at the grocery store, you can get one of those palm-sized wedges for maybe $4 or $6, and even the nicer ones rarely cost more than $15 or so. Asking for $60 for a little tiny wedge of cheese just isn't going to appeal to most crowds, who just want to make a nice charcuterie board or have some cheese to feed to their kids.

    I bought the cheese wheel, and brought it home in my truck. When I rolled it into our apartment at first she was excited, when I started to explain the financials and investment potential she turned sour.

    AIO? Or am I the only one with ambition in our relationship? TLDR; my girlfriend is staying with her parents because I spent my share of our savings on a cheese wheel which can be cut into wedges and sold for a sizeable profit.

    Jems138 OP I haven't figured out how to open it yet, it's covered in thick wax. It looks like a cannon ball. I have tried using a hair dryer and a knife but I can't get into it.

    Alarmed_Gur_4631 It's ball round? Not hockey puck shaped? And for the love of god, it's not a thick wax layer. That's RIND. Watch a YT video and get a parmesan knife set and wire. If you have any money left, get a vacuum sealing machine with pouches and start dividing up the wheel into 1/2 and 1/4 lb chunks.

    Jems138 OP It's not rind it's paraffin wax. It's 21 year aged cheddar so the wax is brittle and hard. The texture is like a cannonball not the shape.

    Lonely_Space_241 How in the hell are you going to find enough buyers for this niche cheese? Don't you need a license to sell food? What regulations do you have to follow? After you cut the cheese, how long will the wheel stay fresh? Can you store it appropriately to preserve it for that length of time?

    You would probably be lucky to recover the amount you paid to begin with, and are probably going to be skirting the law to sell it unless you are already licensed to do so Your girlfriend essentially moving out because of this seems extreme, but to be fair this seems like you really didn't think things through.

    Jems138 OP Also the cheese will not spoil, after 21 years all the moisture has been replaced by calcium lactate crystals. Once the wax seal is broken I will be putting it in my chest freezer

    Chaos-Rainbow Who is going to pay $120/lb for cheese that some random person is selling out of their apartment? If I was going to spend that much I'd want to know that it was stored and handed properly. And actually do you need a food safety license to do this kind of thing?

    Jems138 OP 1. It's not a commodity, it's a heritage cheese and the value is determined by the scarcity. You can't get this cheese from a regular retailer. 2.I have my Ontario food handlers certificate.
