32-year-old changes locks after his friend makes a copy of his key without permission: 'I didn't ask for him to copy my key!'

It turns out that not every friend can be trusted with the keys to your apartment.

This 32-year-old ended up having to change the locks after he found out that his so-called "friend" Derek made a copy of his keys without his approval. The author had previously requested that Derek stop by his place and check on his cat in his absence one weekend. He thought it was a simple ask and that Derek could be trusted. Apparently, the author was wrong.

When he returned to his apartment, nothing appeared to have been stolen or altered in his place. However, not long after coming home, Derek casually mentioned that he had made a copy of the author's key after returning the spare one the author had given him. Naturally, the author was a bit taken aback by this revelation. Derek had even attempted to reframe what he had done as a totally normal thing to do, as if the author was wrong for thinking it was strange. He also claimed that he was planning on telling the author what he did, but totally forgot.

Think about this for a moment. Derek fully retrieved the spare key from his friend before he went out of town, then proceeded to go to a hardware store to make a copy of the key… yet somehow, he didn't think to mention this trip to the owner of the apartment? Seems to me like that errand is extensive and specific enough that you probably wouldn't forget mentioning it… unless you didn't want them to find out at first.
