Once-skittish dumpster kitty invites herself in after a cold snap, becoming a friendly purrmanent resident upon crossing the threshold: ‘She acted right at home’

Scaredy cats are much less fearful when survival is on the line. 

Bernadette, the tuxedo cat, was once scared of the people who roamed the apartment complex, but this frightful kitty learned that not all hoomans drive spooky, loud dump trucks that upend your dumpster home: Some humans have chicken tenders, infinite affection, and a cozy, warm house to live in. 

All it takes is one purrticularly friendly human to change the mind of a stubbornly independent stray cat, but a handful of tuna can go a long way, too.

  • City cats are a rare breed of stray. Like their city-dwelling human neighbors, their rough and tumble attitude translates to their relationships, and stray cats in the city become inherently distrustful of strangers. However, like the hardened wax of a candle, all it takes is a spark and a flame of affection to melt their outer core, and for cats who love the taste of chicken tenders and other human h'ors deurves (likely a taste developed from eating culinary trash outside of the apartment complex), becoming a housecat isn't so bad afterall. 

    This woman's heart was melted the day she met Bernadette for the first time. After seeing a trio of mysertiously aloof kitties taking root as a colony out by her building's dumpster, she knew it was a far-fetched notion to imagine ever petting one. Elusive as smoke and as beautiful as ever, this trio of cats always remained out of reach, no matter how much you pspsps'ed or beckoned with outstretched hands. 

    But this cold weather we're having froze the most intrepid of woes from the kitties, and drove one brave feline outside of her comfort zone and into the arms of a heroic hooman savior. With the boldness of an ox and the deliberate confidence of a Wall Street broker, Bernadette not only replied to the woman's pspsps calls, but she sauntered into her apartment for a plate of snacks without fear. 

    At first drawn in by the smell of breaded chicken and the heat of the hearth, this cat learned that becoming a household pet is a fast track to a life of luxury, a fact that most cats know by instinct. Before they knew it, the pair was bonded eternally, and Bernadette solidified her place in the house furrever, turning from a timid stray into a bold, friendly, and affectionate house cat… All to escape the harshest of winter storms. 

    Purrhaps she's earned a bite of a delicious treat.

  • OP Tanmerman I'm no stranger to the trojan cat phenomenon, so I suspected this too LOL But the vet wasn't sure. Her ear that TNR folks usually tip is mangled, and the vet said he didn't see any marks on her belly that would suggest it. But she's skinny and has been living by the dumpsters for at least as long as I've lived that the complex (18 months), likely longer, and I've never seen her pregnant or kittens running around. Plus many other tenants put out food for her too, so I'm guessing some

  • OP Tanmerman None of the others have indicated that they want to join her, sadly. They run and hide under cars anytime anyone gets close and only come out for food. My partner thinks we should try to bring them inside anyway, but it's a lot harder to bring an unwilling cat inside and I wasn't even fully ready for this one (and she wanted to!). I think we might reevaluate once she acclimates, but I'm not sure yet.
