Daughter refuses to house irresponsible father and sister after their home is damaged by a neighbor's house fire: ‘I'm already at the end of my rope’

Protecting your peace might feel like the wrong choice when you're the go-to shoulder to lean on.

Our family members tend to know our soft spots. We all have them. You might be unable to tell your teenage nephew "no" because you're the person he trusts the most. You will never tell your mother that her cooking is… interesting-tasting because you never want to hurt her feelings. Our soft spots make us human; they teach us that no matter how hard we try to be selfish, there are a few people in our lives that we can only be selfless with.

That's all fine and dandy, until it starts ruining your life. A "yes" man has never, ever had anything work out for them if they say "yes" to things that will only deter them from achieving their highest potential. This isn't to say that you should reject someone's plea for aid at every turn, but it's important to set boundaries and know your limits. The daughter who shares the story you'll read below finally refuses to be the shoulder to lean on, but at what cost? When your peace is on the line, we're of the opinion that there isn't a greater cost than that. Without our peace, we will never be able to be someone's shoulder to lean on ever again.

This is the reality of parenthood, but when you also have to parent your elders, at what point will you have time to take care of yourself? Without you around, nothing gets done. That's why the woman here refuses to break her boundaries.
