Being a cat owner means having to be extra vigilant about the roommates you choose.

It's impossible to know everything about a person before you're officially living with them, we know that. But you do get the opportunity to ask some questions. And the same way that you might ask about cleanliness or noise, as a cat owner, you have an obligation to ask any potential roommate about cats. What they think about cats, how they treat cats… to get the best idea that you can about whether your cat would be safe around them or not. Because crazy things can happen.

Some people hate their roommate's cats and ask them to lock the cats away all the time. Other times, it's the opposite, and the roommates think the cat is theirs too, and some go as far as trapping the cat in their rooms. Sometimes, it's simply the roommates neglecting their own cats and forcing you, as someone who cares about living beings, to take care of them. And then there are the ultimate crazies - people like the roommate in this story, who three her friend out of the house with no warning and then told them that their cat is now her cat, and she can do whatever she wants with it.

Wow. There is so, so much wrong with this, we don't even know where to start. So we'll start with the worst - the cat. The way that this short text exchange infuriates us. There is something very wrong with a person who would use an innocent animal to inflict pain on a human being. Taking care of this cat is not something that this person wants. All she wants is to hurt her friend, and she would do it at the expense of the cat's mental and physical well-being without a second thought. Get all animals away from this human.

We agree. We hope that she seeks some kind of health, because none of this is normal. Beyond that, we're just glad that the cat is in safe hands right now. We're glad that this person was more dumb than outright cruel, because much worse things could have happened. The kitty is safe, you are safe, and right now, no matter the difficulties, you know that whatever place you end up in, it's most likely not going to be worse than this one. We hope that there is some small comfort in that, and in knowing that the internet has got your back.
