  • [I ordered] expensive drinks on purpose after my friends wife kept insisting we split the bill

I have a group of friends Ive been going out to eat with for years. We went through a whole thing a while back where I was basically subsidizing everyones meals because they always
  • wanted to split the bill evenly even though I always ordered less. We worked it out and agreed everyone pays for their own stuff. Problem solved. Or so I thought.
  • One of my friends got married recently and his wife started joining us. Shes cool and my girlfriend gets along with her so sometimes the four of us go out together without the rest of the group.
  • The issue is she is obsessed with splitting the bill. Every single time. She always says its just easier that way. And every single time I order light because I dont eat a lot and I dont think I should be covering someone elses appetizers and dessert and cocktails when I had a salad and water.
  • Ive said multiple times I prefer to just pay for what I ordered. She waves it off like Im being difficult.
  • So last time we went out I decided fine. You want to split it. Lets split it.
  • Friends sharing a conversation at the restaurant.
  • I asked my girlfriend to drive. And I ordered bourbon. Good bourbon. The kind thats like eighteen dollars a glass. And every time I finished one I got another. I wasnt being sloppy or obnoxious I was just enjoying my evening and having drinks. But yeah I ran up a tab.
  • When the bill came I suggested we each just pay our own like I always do. She jumped in with her usual oh lets just split it its easier. Then she saw the total.
  • My drinks alone were probably a third of the entire bill. She got real quiet and started backtracking. Said she didnt realize the split would be that uneven. Said maybe we should just pay separately this time.
  • I smiled and said yeah totally fine with me. Always have been.
  • Friends checking the bill at the end of a fun dinner.
  • ShotWishbone18... NTJ if she wants to split then do it for real. She just didn't think you would play the game better.
  • Jen5872 When she started insisting on splitting the bill you should have just flat out told her "We've already been through this in our group and we've all decided on separate checks when we go out. That's what is fair."
  • jessie783 I'll never understand why this is even a debate. You tell the waiter I'm paying for x,y,z the rest can be split between them. Why ask other people for permission to pay your own bill.
